Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I hope you're doing good. I am writing to you regarding my international students' club arranging an event celebrating different global cuisines which I believe you are helping organse.

Coming from Ireland, I would love to make some food from home for the event. Initially, I was thinking of making some irish stew to showcase Ireland's food. This is probably our most famous and recognisable dish.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with the dish, but it is a dish that includes various food types. It is traditionally a wholesome dish that includes potato, pork meat, carrots, onions and some broth. It is often slowly cooked together in one pot and it is best served with some bread on the side.

I think it would be a great dish to showcase Ireland's food at this event. Although it is probably our most recognisable dish as previously mentioned, it is not extremely popular throughout the world, so it could be new and exciting for many attending the event.

Not to mention it's very tasty! I am interested to hear what you think of my idea.

Kind regards,

Niall

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three points clearly: you offer to prepare Irish stew, explain its ingredients and cooking method, and give a reason for including it. The description that it is “slowly cooked together in one pot” and served with bread helps Luis picture the dish, while the point that it may be unfamiliar to attendees supports its value at an international event. Your purpose and friendly relationship with the organiser are clear throughout. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain briefly why the dish represents Irish food or how it could appeal to a range of guests. The claim that it is “not extremely popular throughout the world” is relevant, but could be linked more explicitly to the event’s aim of sharing different cultures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the event and your offer, describe the stew, then explain why it belongs on the menu and close politely. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “Coming from Ireland,” “Although,” and “Not to mention” help connect the ideas. The organisation is easy to follow, though some cohesion is slightly repetitive: “most famous and recognisable” is repeated as “our most recognisable dish,” and “dish” occurs several times in close succession. You could vary the references—for example, use “this traditional meal” after introducing Irish stew—and make the transition from the description to its cultural significance more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range for a friendly letter, including relevant food vocabulary such as “wholesome,” “broth,” and “slowly cooked,” as well as phrases that express your purpose and opinion. These choices make the dish understandable, and the tone is generally appropriate. Some wording is less precise or natural: “various food types” is vague for ingredients, and “pork meat” is an awkward collocation. “Global cuisines” and “showcase” add some flexibility, but the vocabulary is not consistently precise enough to show a broader range. Aim for more specific food terms and avoid repeating “dish”; for example, name the ingredients directly and refer to the stew as a “traditional meal” or “Irish speciality.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, and several sentences are controlled well, including “Although it is probably our most recognisable dish … it could be new and exciting for many attending the event.” The conditional-style explanation and embedded clauses help vary the writing. A few grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “I hope you're doing good,” the adjective form “well” is needed after “doing.” The sentence beginning “I am writing to you regarding my international students' club arranging…” has an awkward structure; a clearer version would be “I am writing about the event that our club is arranging.” Also, the comma after “Not to mention” is unnecessary in this context. These are noticeable but do not prevent understanding.
