Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I am writing this letter regarding an event which is organised by an International Students club to celebrate popular food items from all around the world and want to suggest a famous dish from my country.
I am from India and my country is well-known for its festivals and dishes made during the main events. I would like suggest a South-Indian dish known as Dosa which is extremely popular in every state of India. People who belongs to this part they consume it in the morning as a healthy breakfast option.
This dish is prepared from various ingredients such as rava, lentils and filling of mashed potatoes with different spices in it. It is served with the sauces originally made from cocunut, tomato and coriander. Mostly people enjoy it with the filter coffee and it is one of the main food item in southern area.
In the event, this food item should be included because majority of people are not aware about this dish and if people from different countries taste it once they will definitely love it. I would also attach the details of the restaurant and the name of the chef who is famous in our city and available to serve this food item during the event.
Thanks, I hope you will consider my suggestion and add this dish for an event celebration.
Regards,
Navpreet Dhillon.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You address all three points clearly: you offer to contribute dosa, describe its ingredients and accompaniments, and explain that the event could introduce it to people unfamiliar with the dish. The details about mashed potatoes, spices, and sauces make the description relevant, while the suggestion of a local chef adds a practical offer. Your reason for inclusion is understandable, though the claim that people will “definitely love it” is broad rather than supported, and the restaurant and chef details are mentioned without explaining how you would arrange their participation. Develop these points with a more specific benefit, such as the dish’s regional significance or suitability for sharing, to make the support more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce your suggestion, describe the dish, explain its value for the event, and close politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking phrases such as “This dish” and “In the event” guide the reader through the message. Some connections are less smooth, however. The opening sentence combines the event context with your proposal, making it long and slightly difficult to follow, while the shift from explaining why dosa belongs at the event to mentioning a restaurant and chef feels abrupt. Separate these ideas and use a clearer transition to show how the chef’s involvement supports your offer.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “ingredients,” “mashed potatoes,” “spices,” and “filter coffee,” which helps make the food description specific. Phrases such as “popular food items” and “healthy breakfast option” are relevant, and the meaning remains clear despite some imprecise choices. There are also spelling and word-choice slips, including “cocunut,” “food item” where a plural is intended, and “main events,” which is vague in this context. Some expressions, such as “sauces originally made from,” are not natural collocations. Aim for more precise food vocabulary and check spelling and collocation so your descriptions sound fluent and accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the name of the chef who is famous in our city” and a conditional structure beginning “if people from different countries taste it once.” The message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “I would like suggest” needs an infinitive marker, “People who belongs” has subject–verb disagreement, and “it is one of the main food item” has a number-agreement error. The opening sentence also joins several ideas without a clear grammatical structure. Review verb patterns, agreement, and sentence boundaries, then proofread longer sentences to improve control.
