Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to request, if you allow me to cook 'Biryani' for the event as it is the most famous, and renowned Pakistani dish. Despite having a variety of cuisines, I'll make sure that our food beats the record. The recipe I follow is inspired by the 'Masterchef Pakistan' which particularly focuses on the delicate flavour and beautiful presentation of food. It will attract the attendees from different cultures and traditions.
Basically, it is a unique blend of fried rice and meat curry. The curry has an amzing flavour as it is made by frying the tomatoes, meat and onions. Adding on, the handful of ingredients that includes, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, salt, black pepper and a few dry spices. Biryani has a beautiful colour of yellow and orange with a little touch of white. It is served with yougurt and garlic chutney.
Specifically having Biryani at the event, will enable us to to showcase our culture widely. Biryani will stand out as it has a delicious traditional touch so it would be quite beneficial for our food industry as people will eventually go and eat biryani's in different restaurants aswell, which will allow our dine-out chains to flourish economically.
I am looking forward to hear from you.
Yours faithfully,
Kisa.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points: you offer to prepare biryani, describe its ingredients and appearance, and explain its cultural and economic value. The dish is clearly identified as Pakistani, and details such as serving it with yoghurt and garlic chutney help the reader picture it. Your reasons for inclusion are relevant, especially showcasing Pakistani culture and introducing attendees to the dish. However, the claim that it will help the food industry and restaurant chains flourish is broad and not fully explained, while the opening claim that your food will “beat the record” is unclear. Develop these points with a more direct link to the event, such as how sharing the dish would encourage cultural exchange.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce your offer, describe biryani in a separate paragraph, and then explain why it belongs at the event. This progression makes the main message easy to follow, and the closing is appropriate. You also use linking expressions such as “Basically,” “Adding on,” and “Specifically.” However, some transitions feel mechanical or do not connect ideas smoothly; “Adding on” introduces an ingredient list, and “Specifically having Biryani at the event” is an awkward start to the final paragraph. The first paragraph also moves quickly from the recipe to attracting attendees. Use more natural links and make the relationship between each supporting detail explicit to strengthen the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “delicate flavour,” “presentation,” “unique blend,” and “traditional touch.” These choices help describe the dish and its appeal, and the meaning remains clear. There are also attempts at more specific food vocabulary, such as “cumin seeds” and “garlic chutney.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “beats the record” does not clearly express that the dish will be popular, and “dine-out chains” is an unusual phrase in this context. Spelling errors such as “amzing” and “yougurt,” along with “aswell,” reduce accuracy. Choose more natural expressions and proofread spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the reason clause in “as it is made by frying…” and the longer sentence explaining the possible economic benefit. Most ideas can be understood, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “I am looking forward to hear from you” needs a gerund after “to,” and “will enable us to to showcase” repeats the infinitive marker. In “the handful of ingredients that includes,” the verb does not agree with the plural noun, and the comma after “Specifically having Biryani at the event” disrupts the sentence structure. Review verb patterns, agreement, and punctuation, then check longer sentences for clear construction.
