Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to offer my help with the upcoming international food festival. I would be delighted to prepare a popular Indian dish for the event.

I would like to make chole bhature, a traditional North Indian dish that consists of spicy chickpea curry served with deep-fried bread. It is usually accompanied by sliced onions, pickles and green chutney. This dish is well known for its rich flavour and delicious taste.

I believe chole bhature would be an excellent addition to the event because it represents India's vibrant food culture. Moreover, it would give international students an opportunitu to experience authentic Indian cuisine and learn about our culinary traditions. I can also prepare a milder version for those who prefer less spicy food.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance with the arrangements. I look forward to participating in this wonderful event.

Best wishes ,

Arsh Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.5

The letter fully addresses the three requested points in a clear, appropriate way. You offer to prepare an Indian dish, explain that chole bhature is spicy chickpea curry served with fried bread, and give a relevant reason for including it: it represents Indian food culture and introduces students to authentic cuisine. The offer to make a milder version also makes your contribution practical and considerate. These ideas are developed sufficiently for the purpose, and the tone suits a letter to an event organiser. To make the response even more complete, you could add a brief practical detail, such as how many portions you could prepare or what equipment you might need, while keeping the focus on the event.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

The information follows a logical sequence: you introduce your offer, describe the dish, explain its value to the event, and close by inviting further contact. Paragraphing supports these distinct purposes, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “because” make the relationships between ideas clear. The final sentences also provide a suitable, courteous ending. Cohesion is generally well managed and does not distract from the message. For a more polished progression, you could connect the description and its cultural significance a little more explicitly, rather than relying mainly on separate statements. Ensure the closing punctuation and spacing are consistent, as in “Best wishes,”.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the dish and explain its cultural value, including “traditional,” “rich flavour,” “authentic Indian cuisine,” and “culinary traditions.” These choices are relevant and generally appropriate for a semi-formal letter. The wording is clear, though some expressions are familiar or broad, such as “delicious taste” and “wonderful event,” so there is room for more precise and varied phrasing. There is also a spelling slip in “opportunitu,” which should be “opportunity.” More specific language about the dish’s texture, ingredients, or popularity would demonstrate greater flexibility and precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The letter shows good control of a range of sentence forms. The relative clause in “a traditional North Indian dish that consists of…” and the conditional phrase “for those who prefer less spicy food” add variety, while most sentences are clear and grammatically sound. Verb forms and sentence boundaries are handled consistently. A few small presentation issues remain: the comma in “Best wishes ,” is incorrectly spaced, and the sign-off would be more conventionally punctuated as “Best wishes,”. The sentence patterns are effective but mostly straightforward; using a wider range of complex structures, while maintaining this level of accuracy, would strengthen grammatical flexibility.
