Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to express my interest in upcoming event of our club.

I have been the member of this club since 2018. I have organised so many events for international students. Today I came across about the recent activity that is going to be held in november to celebrate popular food from around the world. I would like to present an Asian cuisine called "Nihari" to represent my country.

Nihari is basically traditional dish of south punjab and the main ingredient of dish is lamb meat. It is the perfect blend of spice and nutrition. In Pakistan, this cuisine is of central attention during celebration and gatherings.

As I travelled a lot and explored several foods, I can say that meat is popular among all the nations. If we will present this dish, many international students will explore new idea how to cook perfect balance of meat and modern spices.

It would be a great owner for me to represent food from country.

Thank you for understanding and consideration.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Samra javed

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you offer to prepare Nihari, identify it as a lamb-based dish from South Punjab, and explain its place at Pakistani celebrations and its potential appeal to international students. These details make the letter relevant and show a clear willingness to contribute. The explanation of why it belongs at the event is less fully developed, however: the claim that meat is popular across nations is broad, and the benefit of learning to cook it is not clearly connected to the event’s celebration of food cultures. To strengthen the response, explain more specifically what makes Nihari distinctive and how it would introduce guests to Pakistani cuisine. The response meets the stated length requirement; eight words copied from the task prompt were excluded from the count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a recognisable structure, moving from its purpose to the dish, its cultural context, and a closing request. Paragraphing helps separate the introduction from the description and justification, and phrases such as “I would like to” and “I look forward to hearing from you” guide the reader. Some links are less effective or mechanical: “Today I came across about” does not connect smoothly to the event, while “As I travelled a lot” introduces a personal point that does not clearly support the argument. The final two ideas about the dish’s appeal and the honour of representing the country could be linked more logically. Use clearer transitions and ensure each paragraph develops one connected purpose.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “traditional dish,” “main ingredient,” “blend of spice and nutrition,” and “celebration and gatherings.” The name of the dish and its cultural context also give the letter some specificity. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “came across about,” “central attention,” and “explore new idea how to cook perfect balance.” There are also spelling and word-form issues, including “owner” where “honour” is intended and “november,” which should be capitalised. These choices sometimes make the meaning less precise, even though the overall message remains understandable. Aim for natural combinations such as “a popular feature of celebrations” and “discover how the spices are balanced.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple statements and attempts at more complex structures, for example, “If we will present this dish, many international students will explore…” This shows an effort to vary sentence forms, and the main message is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, verb forms, and sentence construction: “I have been the member” needs an article adjustment, “I came across about” has an incorrect pattern, and “If we will present” should use a present-tense condition clause. In “Nihari is basically traditional dish,” an article is also missing. Review these patterns and check sentence boundaries and punctuation, including the extra space before the quotation mark’s closing context. More accurate control of these structures would make the letter smoother.
