Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Luis,
Good evening. I hope you are doing well and in great spirits. I am writing to give you a favor of introducing traditional dish from my city as well in the upcoming event.
The dish name is Siddu and it is a Himachali dish. It is particularly a fermented steamed bread commonly made from wheat flour, with yeast playing a key role in its preparation by allowing the dough to rise over several minutes or hours. It is often stuffed with various fillings such as green peas, walnuts, pudina, and herbs. It is typically served with accompaniments like clarified butter (desi ghee) or green curry.
I believe this should be included in our "food from around the world" event. Himachali siddu is generally considered a healthy and wholesome food, especially when compared to fried or refined-flour snacks.
The savory stuffing typically includes protein- and mineral-rich ingredients like walnuts, poppy seeds, or green herbs. In aadition to this, many stuffed breads or dumplings that are deep-fried, siddu is steamed, which keeps it light on the stomach and benefical for kids to older ones.
I really appreciate, if you could add this into your list.
Thank you for your time. I look forward to hear from you.
Yours sincerely,
Aashima

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you offer to contribute Siddu, explain that it is fermented steamed bread with possible fillings and accompaniments, and give reasons for including it, especially its cultural identity and healthier preparation. The description is specific and the explanation is supported with details about ingredients and steaming. Your purpose remains clear throughout. To make the case more fully developed, connect the dish more directly to the event’s international celebration—for example, explain what guests could learn about Himachali food culture or how they might enjoy tasting it. The request to Luis is polite, though a more direct offer to prepare or bring the dish would make your commitment unmistakable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall structure: an opening purpose, a paragraph describing the dish, a paragraph explaining its value, and a courteous closing. This gives the reader a coherent progression. You also use linking expressions such as “I believe” and “In addition to this” to connect ideas. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and the final paragraph’s ideas about health and ingredients could be ordered more smoothly. The sentence beginning “In addition to this” is difficult to follow, which interrupts the flow between the comparison with fried foods and the point about who can eat Siddu. Use clearer links and ensure each paragraph develops one main point before moving to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You show a useful range of vocabulary for describing food, including “fermented,” “steamed,” “accompaniments,” “clarified butter,” and “protein- and mineral-rich.” These choices make the explanation informative and show some control of less common language. A few expressions are not quite natural or precise, such as “give you a favor of introducing” and “benefical for kids to older ones.” There are also spelling slips in “aadition” and “benefical.” Aim for more idiomatic phrasing and check spelling carefully; for example, you could say “I would like to offer to prepare” and “suitable for people of all ages.” This would make the letter sound more fluent and polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “a fermented steamed bread commonly made from wheat flour” and the explanation of how yeast helps the dough rise. Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “traditional dish” needs an article, and “I really appreciate, if you could add this” has an incorrect sentence pattern and punctuation. “I look forward to hear from you” also needs a gerund after “look forward to.” The long sentence beginning “In addition to this” is structurally incomplete. Review articles, verb patterns, and sentence boundaries, then proofread complex sentences to ensure their clauses are complete.
