IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You are a member of an International Students' club. The club is organising an event to celebrate popular food from around the world.

Write a letter to the event organiser, Luis. In your letter

  • offer to make a popular dish from your country
  • describe what this dish is
  • explain why it should be included in the event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to you to share my appreciation for organizing the food event this year. I would also like to offer to prepare a dish from my own country.

The event is extremely popular among International students and includes a variety of dishes from various countries. I would also like to participate and bring a dish from my own country, Pakistan.

The dish is called Biryani. It is a fragrant rice, potato, and meat dish. You can make it with lamb, beef, or Chicken. For those students who are vegetarians, it can also be made with potatoes and peas only.

Since it is an International student event, it is only fitting that dishes from several countries be included. It is a very admired dish in South Asia and globally. In addition, the spice level can also be adjusted to cater to the taste buds of the majority of participants.

I would be thrilled if you could accept my offer for inclusion of this dish. Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Yours faithfully,

Fahad

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you offer to prepare a Pakistani dish, explain that biryani contains rice, potatoes and meat, and give reasons for including it. The vegetarian option and adjustable spice level add useful detail, while the letter maintains a polite, consistent purpose. Your explanation that biryani is admired in South Asia and globally supports its inclusion, although this claim is quite general; a specific reason, such as its distinctive flavour or its representation of Pakistani cuisine, would make the case more convincing. The description could also clarify how the ingredients are prepared or served. Overall, the task is fully addressed and the ideas are extended, but some support remains broad rather than precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce your offer, describe the dish, explain why it suits the event, and close politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “In addition” make the reasoning easy to follow. However, the second paragraph repeats the offer already made in the opening (“I would also like to offer” and “I would also like to participate and bring a dish”), so progression is less efficient. Some connections are also rather formulaic, and “Since it is an International student event” does not link as precisely to the claim that the dish is admired globally as it could. Avoid repeating information and make each paragraph advance a distinct point.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes relevant food terms such as “fragrant,” “vegetarians,” and “spice level.” The meaning remains clear throughout, and the tone is generally appropriate for a polite letter. There are, however, some imprecise or unnatural choices: “a very admired dish” is not a natural collocation, and “cater to the taste buds of the majority” is wordy where a simpler expression would be more fluent. “Food event” and “dish” are also repeated, limiting variety. Use more precise language to explain the dish’s appeal and vary repeated terms, while keeping the wording natural rather than overly formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the conditional “it can also be made with potatoes and peas only” and the purpose clause “to cater to the taste buds.” Most sentences are easy to understand, and errors do not obstruct the message. Some control issues remain: “a fragrant rice, potato, and meat dish” has an awkward article construction, and “For those students who are vegetarians” is unnecessarily cumbersome. Capitalisation is inconsistent in “Chicken,” and the closing fragment “Looking forward to hearing back from you” would be more complete as a full sentence. These are limited issues, but more consistently accurate sentence construction and punctuation would strengthen the letter.
