Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter to suggest you famous food dishe from my country as we are celebrating an event for our Internation student's club next weekend.

As I am originally from India, I know many food dishes which we can add in our event and India is known for flavorful food. I would like you to add Dhokla as it is most famous dish in Gujarat.

Dhokla is pure vegetarian and it is very easy to prepare. This dish is made of chickpea flour batter and basic Indian spices, which you have to keep it overnight and next day you can steam this batter with cilantro sauce.

In our event many people are coming from different countries and some of them are vegan, so this dish is perfect for all kind of people. Also, it is healthiest option as in this dish we do not need to fry as well as chickpea flour has high protein.

I see you soon and let me know if you need my help.

Regards,

Jinal.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you offer to contribute dhokla, explain that it is made from chickpea-flour batter and spices, and justify its inclusion by noting that it is vegetarian and suitable for guests with different dietary needs. The health and protein points also support your recommendation. The purpose and your position remain clear throughout. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain more precisely how the dish is prepared or served—for example, clarify the role of the cilantro sauce—and make the claim about suitability for vegans more cautious, since the recipe may need checking for ingredients such as dairy. A more explicit offer to prepare or bring the dish would also strengthen the letter’s practical response to the organiser.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible progression: you introduce your suggestion, identify the dish, describe it, and then explain why it suits the event. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “Also” make the supporting reasons easy to follow. The closing is appropriate for a friendly letter. Some connections are less smooth, however: “As I am originally from India” leads into a broad statement about Indian food before returning to dhokla, and “which you have to keep it overnight” makes the preparation sequence harder to follow. Use clearer transitions between the dish’s ingredients, preparation, and benefits, and ensure each paragraph develops one main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “chickpea flour,” “cilantro,” “vegetarian,” and “high protein,” which help convey the dish’s ingredients and appeal. The meaning is generally clear, but several word-choice, spelling, and collocation errors reduce precision: “food dishe” should be “dish,” “flavorful food” is broad, and “healthiest option” is an overstatement. “International student’s club” also needs a more natural form. Aim for more precise descriptions of the dish and avoid claims that sound absolute. For example, you could describe it as a “popular regional savoury snack” and say it is a “healthier option” rather than the healthiest.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause “as we are celebrating” and the conditional-style explanation about guests from different countries. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “I would like you to add Dhokla as it is most famous dish,” an article is needed before “most famous”; “which you have to keep it overnight” has an unclear relative-clause structure; and “I see you soon” uses the wrong verb form for a future expectation. There are also awkward constructions such as “we do not need to fry.” Practise articles, relative clauses, and future forms, while keeping sentence structures varied.
