Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter to request a consideration on contributing to the upcoming event the International Student Food Festival. I would likely to offer my ideas on what dish that I can offer to the event that would make to their liking and might even wanted to know how it was made.

The dish that I wanted to offer as the popular dish at my country is called Sinigang that is a locally made by different people in different parts of the country because of its different kind of version but mostly I wanted to share my version. This is a sour soup dish which it contains different vegetables like radish, eggplant, okra, water spinach and also uses different meat if they wanted pork, chicken or fish salmon. But mostly in our version on the hometown we use pork meat because of its flavor. Lastly the main base of the sourness of the soup is the tamarind that we extract on it, if tamarind is not available we have also a different alternative like a sinigang mix which is tamarind powder with spices.

I think this dish should probably included at the event so people may know how it was made and how delicious it would be when taste it. Most importantly the culture and history of the dish that where it was created, so they will know that this dish is also a part of celebrations in our country when they celebrate their birthdays.

I hope that you consider my request on offering the dish a chance to be known at the event.

Yours Sincerely,

Julian Mari Kilayko

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you offer Sinigang, explain its ingredients and preparation, and give reasons for including it, such as sharing its cultural significance and role in birthday celebrations. The description of the sour soup is the most developed part, with specific vegetables, meat options and tamarind mentioned. Your reasons for its place at the event are relevant, but the cultural history is referred to generally rather than explained, and the claim that people will want to know how it is made could be supported more clearly. The polite request and closing suit a letter to an organiser. To strengthen the response further, develop the event-related benefits with a specific example, such as how visitors could taste or learn about the dish.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening offer, a paragraph describing the dish, a paragraph explaining its value, and a closing request. This makes the main purpose easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “But mostly,” “Lastly,” and “Most importantly” to signal additions and emphasis. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear: “This is a sour soup dish which it contains…” does not link the description smoothly, and the final paragraph moves from taste to culture and celebrations without fully explaining the relationship. The long ingredient sentence also carries several details at once. For stronger progression, use clearer sentence boundaries and connect each reason directly to why the event’s audience would benefit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary to describe the dish, including “sour soup,” “radish,” “water spinach,” “tamarind,” and “spices.” These specific terms help readers picture Sinigang and show some ability to use less common food-related vocabulary. Meaning is generally clear, but several word choices and collocations are awkward, such as “request a consideration,” “make to their liking,” and “the main base of the sourness.” “Popular dish at my country” is also not a natural expression. These choices sometimes make the letter sound less fluent, even though they do not prevent understanding. Aim for conventional collocations and more precise phrasing, for example, “I would like to contribute a dish” and “the soup’s sour flavour comes from tamarind.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “because of its different kind of version” and conditional wording about using an alternative if tamarind is unavailable. However, complex sentences are often not controlled accurately, and errors sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “I would likely to offer,” “which it contains,” and “so they will know that this dish is also a part of celebrations.” There are also problems with articles, verb forms and sentence boundaries, as in “a locally made by different people” and the long sentence beginning “This is a sour soup dish.” Practise building accurate clauses first, then combine them with relative clauses and conditionals. Check subject–verb patterns and use of articles when revising.
