Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing well. I recently heard about the upcoming event organized by the International Student's club to celebrate popular food from around the world, and I would love to contribute by preparing a traditional dish from my country.
I would like to make vegetable biryani, which is one of the most popular and well-loved dishes in my culture. It is a fragrant rice dish cooked with a variety of vegetables, aromatic spices, and herbs. The dish is usually served with yougurt or a light salad, which balances the rich flavours. It is colorful, flavourful, and suitable for poeple with different dietary preferences, including vegetarians.
I belived this dish would be a great addition to the event because it represents the diversity and richness of international cusine. Many people are curious to try food with unique spices and flavours, and biryani is always a crowd favourite. Including it would help visitors experience an authentic taste of my country and make the event more enjoyable and memorable.
Please let me know if this works for you or if you need any further details. I would be happy to help.
Kind rgards,
Dhrumil

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.5
The letter covers all three requirements clearly: you offer to prepare vegetable biryani, explain its ingredients and how it is served, and give reasons for including it. The description—“a fragrant rice dish cooked with a variety of vegetables, aromatic spices, and herbs”—is specific, while the points about cultural diversity and giving visitors an authentic taste support your case well. The friendly opening and closing also suit a letter to an event organiser. To make the response even more fully developed, add a practical detail about your offer, such as how many portions you could prepare or whether you can accommodate particular dietary needs. Overall, the task is addressed thoroughly, with only a small opportunity to make the proposal more concrete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
The information follows a clear, effective sequence: you introduce the event and your offer, describe the dish, explain its value, and close by inviting a reply. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking phrases such as “because” and “Including it” make the reasoning easy to follow. The references to “this dish” and “it” are generally clear, and the letter format is appropriate. To make the organisation still more polished, you could connect the description and its suitability to the event more explicitly—for example, by linking the vegetarian option to the club’s international audience. The current cohesion is well managed; a slightly more seamless connection between details would make the progression feel even more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.5
You use a good range of relevant vocabulary, including “fragrant,” “aromatic spices,” “dietary preferences,” “diversity,” and “authentic taste.” These choices help convey the dish’s appeal and cultural significance, and the tone remains suitable for a friendly formal letter. Some phrasing is less precise or natural: “crowd favourite” is broad, and “food with unique spices” could be expressed more specifically. There are also spelling errors in “yougurt,” “poeple,” “belived,” “cusine,” and “rgards,” which detract from otherwise clear communication. Proofreading these slips and choosing a few more precise collocations would strengthen the control and flexibility of your vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The letter includes a useful mix of sentence forms, including the relative clause in “which is one of the most popular and well-loved dishes” and the longer explanation beginning “I believe this dish would be a great addition … because…”. Most sentences are clear, and the reader can follow the offer and supporting reasons without difficulty. However, the range of structures is somewhat limited, with several sentences following similar straightforward patterns. You could add a conditional or a more varied complex sentence to show greater flexibility. Check punctuation and sentence boundaries as you revise, and ensure that grammatical forms remain accurate when expanding your ideas. The overall control is good, but more varied structures and consistently accurate execution would improve it.
