Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Luis,
How are you? I hope you are doing well.
I am writing this to offer a popular dish from my country to be part of International student's club happening this Saturday.
I have been an active memeber of this club since I joined my university. I just came to know about an event organized by club to celebrate international cuisine.I want to become a part of this event. I am very fond of cooking and I would love to cook food that represents my country.
Thus, I have decided to cook biryani. It is a very trendy and delicious dish from my state. However, it takes alot of time to cook it. This dish is for non vegetarains because i add chicken or lamb in it. Moreover, I am thinking of making one pot of vegetable biryani for vegetarians. Biryani is famous for its savory and salty flavour. Rice is the main component of biryani.
From my point of view, this dish represents not only my country but it also shows the diversity of my country and culture.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Mahnoor Maryam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you offer to make biryani, describe its ingredients and flavours, and explain that it represents your country’s cultural diversity. The offer is clear, and mentioning both chicken or lamb and a vegetarian version makes it relevant to an international food event. The explanation of why the dish deserves inclusion is present, but it is less developed than the description; explain more specifically what makes biryani distinctive or appealing to guests. Some details are also unclear, such as calling it a dish “from my state” without identifying the state or country. The response covers the task well overall, while fuller support for the reason for inclusion would make it more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce your offer, provide background, describe biryani, and close politely. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and transitions such as “Thus” and “Moreover” guide the reader. However, some links feel mechanical or do not express the relationship precisely. For example, “Thus” introduces your choice of dish without a clear preceding conclusion, while “However” before the cooking-time detail suggests a contrast that is not explained. The sentence about representing your country and its diversity could also connect more directly to the event’s purpose. Aim for transitions that show the exact relationship between ideas, and keep each paragraph focused on one main purpose.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the letter, including relevant food vocabulary such as “biryani,” “vegetable,” “savory,” “flavour,” and “component.” Phrases such as “represents … the diversity of my country and culture” also communicate your reason for contributing. Some word choices and collocations are less natural or precise: “trendy” is not the best description of a traditional dish, and “one pot of vegetable biryani” is unclear when you mean a serving or batch. There are also spelling errors, including “memeber,” “alot,” and “vegetarains.” These do not prevent understanding, but careful proofreading and more precise food-related phrasing would improve control and make the letter sound more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including “I would love to cook food that represents my country” and “From my point of view, this dish represents not only my country but it also shows…”. Most ideas remain easy to understand, but some grammatical and punctuation errors persist. For example, “I am writing this to offer a popular dish … to be part of” has an awkward construction; “I just came to know about an event organized by club” is missing an article; and “because i add chicken or lamb in it” needs correct capitalization and a more natural clause structure. Several sentences also run together after full stops, as in “cuisine.I” and “state.However.” Review articles, sentence boundaries, and capitalization to improve accuracy.
