Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis
I have just come to know that club is aranging an event to celebrate popular food from around the world. With the reference to this, I want to offer a very popular dish of the pakistani cuisine, named Hayderabai Biryani.
As I have been a student of the nearby university for the last three years and an active member of the club for the last 2 years, I would feel real honour if you would allow me to present the Hayderabadi Biryani in the event. I will not charge for this; you can consider this service as a contribution towards the club event.
This is famous dish in all over Paksitan, and particulary in Hyderabad, Sindh. It is made of Basmati rice and a slow-cooked tendered beef. Usually beef is cooked separatly with the traditional spices of Hyderabad region, and rice are half-boiled separatly. Once both items are ready, they are mixed and put on a low flame for about half an hour so that the arouma of beef curry get mixed well into the rice.
I have realised that around twenty percent of universities students are from Pakistan, therefore, this dish can be talk of the town among them. I believe it will very nostalgic for them to find this while they are studying overseas. Additionally, it will provide a good chance for the local students to experience a different cuisine.
I look forward to your kind approval for this request so that I can make arrangement before the event.
Yours sincerely,
Waqass

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You address all three points clearly: you offer to prepare biryani, explain its ingredients and cooking process, and give reasons for including it. The offer is specific and courteous, and the detail about Pakistani students and local students gives the organiser a clear rationale. The dish description is particularly well extended, while the explanation of its cultural significance is somewhat more general: “it will be very nostalgic for them” could be supported with a more precise account of its connection to home or shared traditions. The response maintains a clear purpose throughout and is appropriate for a letter to the organiser. To strengthen it further, develop that final justification with one concrete example of the dish’s cultural or social importance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the event and your offer, describe your connection to the club, explain the dish, and then justify its inclusion before closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these functions, and links such as “Additionally” make the final reasons easy to follow. The sequence within the cooking description is also logical, moving from preparing the beef and rice to combining them. Some connections are less smooth, however: “With the reference to this” is an awkward transition, and the opening paragraph could move more directly from the event to your offer. The personal background paragraph also interrupts that connection slightly. Use simpler, more natural transitions and keep closely related information together to make the progression even more seamless.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the task, including food-related terms such as “Basmati rice,” “traditional spices,” and “low flame,” as well as suitable formal expressions like “contribution” and “approval.” These choices make the dish and your offer understandable. There are, however, several spelling and word-choice errors, including “aranging,” “particulary,” “arouma,” and “nostalgic” where the intended meaning may be closer to “comforting” or “reminiscent of home.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “slow-cooked tendered beef” and “talk of the town among them.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations; this will let your vocabulary attempts sound more precise and fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a conditional request (“I would feel real honour if you would allow me”) and longer sentences explaining the cooking process. The meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “club is aranging an event” needs an article, and “This is famous dish” also requires “a.” In “I believe it will very nostalgic,” the verb “be” is missing; “universities students” has an incorrect plural construction, and “rice are” shows a subject–verb agreement problem. The sentence beginning “Once both items are ready” is ambitious but would benefit from more accurate agreement and article use. Check articles, verb forms, and singular/plural agreement carefully, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
