Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

The purpose of this letter is to propose you to include an Indian dish to the coming event for celebrating famous food from the world.

Since you are an event organiser, I would like you to include Shahi Paneer in the menu. As this involves basic ingredients like onions, tomatoes, some cashew nuts, spices, cream and cottage cheese. This dish is plant based, thereby can be enjoyed by everyone.

The uniqueness in the taste demonstrates the richness of spices from India. Moreover, its smoothness comfortes people, and can be enjoyed eating with bread or rice. I can personally assist the chef while making it to avoid any inconvenience or unnecessary stress.

I would like to introduce this dish to others in order to represent Indian cousine and advertise it for its growth around the world.

I hope you will consider this idea of representing this dish from my culture.

Kind regards,

Suman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you offer to make Shahi Paneer, identify its ingredients and plant-based nature, and explain its value as a representation of Indian cuisine. The offer to assist the chef also makes your proposal practical. Your reasons are relevant, but some are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, saying the dish “can be enjoyed by everyone” could be qualified, since it contains dairy, and the claim that it will “advertise it for its growth around the world” is unclear. Develop the cultural and event-related benefits more specifically—for instance, explain how its flavours or serving style would introduce guests to Indian food. Overall, the purpose and position remain clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear progression from the proposal, to a description of the dish, to reasons for including it, and it ends with a polite closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these functions, while links such as “Moreover” and “thereby” show an attempt to connect ideas. This gives the response a coherent overall arrangement. However, some connections feel mechanical or do not accurately express the relationship between ideas: “As this involves basic ingredients…” is a sentence fragment, and “thereby” does not fit naturally before “can be enjoyed by everyone.” The final two paragraphs also repeat the idea of representing Indian culture. More natural transitions and less repetition would make the progression smoother and closer to consistently flexible cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including specific food vocabulary such as “cashew nuts,” “spices,” “cream,” and “cottage cheese,” as well as descriptive terms like “smoothness” and “richness.” These choices make the dish understandable and give the letter some detail. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural word choices and collocations. “Propose you to include” is not the natural way to make this request; “suggest including” would be more idiomatic. “Comfortes people” is unclear, and “advertise it for its growth” does not convey your intended meaning precisely. There is also a spelling error in “cousine.” These slips do not prevent understanding, but more accurate collocations and word forms would improve precision and naturalness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including “Since you are an event organiser” and “in order to represent Indian cuisine.” The main message remains understandable, and some sentences are controlled, such as “I can personally assist the chef while making it.” However, some grammatical errors remain. “As this involves basic ingredients…” is a dependent clause presented as a complete sentence; connect it to the previous sentence. In “I would like you to include Shahi Paneer in the menu,” the article should be “on the menu.” The construction “thereby can be enjoyed” also needs a subject, such as “so it can be enjoyed.” Check sentence completeness and clause connections while continuing to use varied structures.
