Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter to request you to make a special dish at annual function of "Internationl Students's club" that is going to held on 15th November in sydney. The club aims at the best function of world in which a variety of foods would be included.

I want you to make Pizza for this occasion because its most demanding dish all around the word. In sydney, your pizzas are higly recommended because of its delicious taste. Last time my team memeber really liked it.

This year, different memebrs of all over the world are going to appear in this party;therefore our team decided to add your pizza in our function. There would also be many other dishes so pizza should be top piority. There may be other country's pizza's different flavours so make sure that our dish should be highlighted.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

Your faithfully,

Huda

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The letter is related to the event and makes a clear offer to provide pizza, but it does not fully meet the task’s key requirements. The prompt asks you to offer to make a popular dish from your own country and describe what it is. Instead, you ask Luis to make pizza and refer to “your pizzas,” so the writer’s role and the dish’s connection to their country are unclear. The description focuses on its popularity and taste rather than explaining what the dish consists of. You do give a reason for including it—its appeal to international members—and mention other flavours, but these points are brief and not clearly supported. Address each bullet directly and develop the dish description and its cultural significance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic letter structure, with separate paragraphs for the request, reasons, and closing. The ideas are generally understandable, and “because” and “therefore” show some links between them. However, the overall progression is not always clear: the opening introduces an event and asks Luis to make a dish, while the next paragraph shifts to praising his pizzas, leaving the purpose of the letter confusing. The final paragraph repeats the idea that pizza should be included and highlighted. Some linking is mechanical, and punctuation around “therefore” is faulty. Organise the letter around the three requested points, using clear paragraph topics and references that make it obvious who is offering to prepare the dish.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use a small range of vocabulary relevant to an event and food, including “variety of foods,” “delicious taste,” “different flavours,” and “highlighted.” These choices make the general topic clear. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the intended meaning difficult to follow. For example, “request you to make” does not express the writer’s offer, and “best function of world” is unclear. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “Internationl,” “higly,” “memeber,” and “piority.” Aim for precise phrases suited to a formal club letter, and proofread spelling and word forms. More specific food vocabulary would also help you describe the dish rather than only praise its popularity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at longer structures, such as the sentence beginning “This year” and linking ideas with “therefore.” However, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often inaccurate. Examples include “that is going to held,” which needs a passive verb form, and “because its most demanding dish,” which is missing a verb and an article. There are also errors in agreement and sentence construction, as in “your pizzas are … because of its delicious taste,” and the closing phrase “I am looking forward to hear from you” uses the wrong verb pattern. These errors can make parts of the message harder to understand. Practise accurate verb forms, articles, agreement, and verb patterns before adding more complex structures.
