Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to inform you that I am interested in participating in the event organized to celebrate popular food from around the world. As, I am from India. I would love to showcase the cultural diversity and would love to prepare a very famous dish called Biryani.

This dish is made and enjoyed by everyone in India. The main ingredient of biryani is rice, which is paired with either any kind of meat or vegetables. The best part about this dish is that the varied types of spices are used such as pepper, clove and tumeric, which brings out the perfect blend and flavours. This dish is best paired with raita and salads.

The main reason I would suggest to keep this dish in the event because it represents the cultural diversity and its health benefits. In addition to this I have an experience of cooking biryani in large quantity and this dish could easily feed many people.

Please let me know how you feel about this and send me the details about the number of people would be coming so I can start preparation. I am looking forward for your response.

Your sincerely,

Diksha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you offer to prepare biryani, describe its rice, meat or vegetable options and spices, and explain its cultural significance and suitability for feeding many people. The offer is direct and the closing asks for practical event details, so the letter fulfils its purpose. Your reasons are relevant, though the claim about “health benefits” is not explained, and the cultural-diversity point is repeated rather than supported with a specific example. To strengthen the response further, briefly explain what makes biryani distinctive in Indian food culture or how its ingredients and serving style would appeal to attendees.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce your offer, describe the dish, give reasons for including it, and finish with a request and sign-off. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “In addition to this” help connect related points. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “The main reason I would suggest to keep this dish in the event because…” does not clearly link the reason to the recommendation, while “As, I am from India” creates an awkward break in the opening. Use more natural transitions and make each paragraph’s central point explicit. The organisation is sound, but cohesion is not yet consistently smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and includes relevant food terms such as “ingredient,” “spices,” “raita,” and “cultural diversity.” These help the reader understand the dish and its appeal. You also attempt more descriptive language in “perfect blend and flavours,” although some choices are imprecise or repetitive: “would love” appears twice in the opening, and “popular” and “famous” convey similar ideas. There are also spelling and collocation slips, including “tumeric” and “prepare preparation.” Aim for more precise expressions and check spelling; for instance, describe the dish as a “fragrant combination” of rice, spices and other ingredients.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause “which brings out…” and the conditional idea that the dish “could easily feed many people.” Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. “As, I am from India” is an incomplete sentence with incorrect punctuation, and “The main reason I would suggest to keep this dish in the event because…” has a faulty clause structure. In the final request, “the number of people would be coming” needs a relative structure, such as “the number of people who will be coming.” Review sentence boundaries and clause construction, while continuing to use varied sentence patterns.
