Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

The International Students’ club is hosting an event to celebrate popular food from around the world, and as a member, I would like to make one of the popular dish from where I came from, the Philippines. I would like to offer the famous adobo from our country. This dish is easy to cook and will surely be loved by the students. It is a pork that has a balanced taste of sweet and salty. It was cooked with vinegar, soy sauce, and some add little bit of sugar, it can be spicy or not. I believe that this dish should be included in the event because not only it tastes good but it’s also a dish that will be liked by many. I’m sure that they will keep on looking for this dish once they tasted it. And I’m proud to present this dish because I’m confident that many people will like it and so that they will have a background on food in the Philippines

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you offer to prepare Filipino adobo, describe its ingredients and sweet-salty taste, and explain that students may enjoy it and learn about Philippine food. The offer is clear and relevant, and the dish is identified specifically. The explanation of why it belongs at the event is less fully developed: “it tastes good” and “will be liked by many” repeat a general claim rather than giving distinct reasons, such as how the dish represents local cooking or can introduce students to familiar ingredients used in a new way. The description also leaves some details unclear. You already show a clear purpose and relevant support; to strengthen the response further, extend the reasons with specific, convincing details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The ideas follow a generally sensible order: you introduce your offer, describe adobo, and then explain why it should be included. Linking phrases such as “because” and “not only…but” help connect the explanation to your recommendation. However, the letter is presented as one long paragraph, so the shift from the offer to the dish’s description and then to its value for the event is not visually clear. The final sentences also repeat the idea that people will like the dish, and “And” at the start of the last sentence makes the progression feel less controlled. Use separate paragraphs for the offer and description, then the reasons, and reduce repeated points to make the organisation clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “popular dish,” “vinegar,” “soy sauce,” “balanced taste,” and “spicy.” These choices make the subject understandable and show some ability to describe food. However, several phrases are imprecise or repetitive, such as “one of the popular dish,” “some add little bit of sugar,” and the repeated claim that the dish “will be liked by many.” “A background on food in the Philippines” is also an unnatural way to express the cultural value of the dish. Aim for more precise food and cultural vocabulary, and vary the wording when explaining its appeal. More natural collocations would make the letter sound more fluent and persuasive.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including “I believe that this dish should be included…because…” and the “not only…but” construction. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “one of the popular dish” has a number-agreement problem, while “It is a pork that has…” uses an awkward sentence structure. The clause “It was cooked with vinegar, soy sauce, and some add little bit of sugar” combines verb forms incorrectly, and the comma splice before “it can be spicy or not” should be separated or joined with a suitable conjunction. Practise accurate noun phrases and complete clauses, and check punctuation when combining ideas.
