Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to let you know that im offering a popular dish from my country.
This food that I'm about to offer is called adobo one of the most popular dish in my country the dish is very easy to cook firstly you saute the garlic and onions then you add chicken or pork and fry it. Finally you add soy sauce and vinegar and let it simmer. Since some students do not eat pork i suggest using chicken instead.
Im hoping that this dish im offering to the event will be included because this food is very popular to some foreign nationals they are even making a video making this dish and post it on social media websites since some of the students and visitors are from different countries and i guarantee you that this dish im offering to the event will be one of the most popular one.
Please let me know if you accepting my offer im very excited on this event.
Love,
Michael

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you offer to make adobo, explain its ingredients and preparation, and give reasons for including it. The cooking sequence and suggestion to use chicken for students who avoid pork make the dish concrete and relevant. Your reason that adobo is popular and shared on social media is also pertinent, though the claim that it will be “one of the most popular” is asserted rather than supported, and the benefit to the event could be explained more specifically—for example, how it introduces guests to your country’s food culture. The offer is clear throughout, and the response covers the task well; fuller development and support for the reasons would make the letter more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening offer, a paragraph describing the dish, a paragraph explaining its value, and a closing request. Sequencing words such as “firstly” and “Finally” help readers follow the recipe. However, several ideas are crowded into long sentences, especially the explanation of the dish and the paragraph beginning “Im hoping.” The repeated “since” and repeated references to “this dish” make connections feel mechanical, while the final request would be clearer as a separate, direct sentence. Use full stops to divide the recipe and reasons into manageable units, and vary linking expressions so the progression is smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the offer and recipe, including “saute,” “garlic,” “vinegar,” and “simmer.” “Popular dish” and “foreign nationals” also show an attempt to describe the food’s wider appeal. However, the range is limited by repeated wording such as “this dish,” “popular,” and “event,” and some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, including “making a video making this dish” and “one of the most popular one.” More precise food and cultural vocabulary would make the letter more fluent and persuasive. Check spelling and capitalization as well: “im” should be “I’m,” and “adobo” should be capitalized when it begins a sentence or appears as a proper dish name.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You communicate the main ideas using both simple statements and longer sentences, and the recipe sequence is generally understandable. However, control is uneven, particularly in long sentences joined without clear punctuation. For example, “This food that I'm about to offer is called adobo one of the most popular dish…” needs a clearer sentence boundary and plural agreement (“dishes”). There are also errors in verb forms and agreement, such as “if you accepting my offer” and “one of the most popular one,” as well as missing apostrophes in “im.” Practise separating clauses and checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and plural forms. More accurate sentence construction would make your message easier to read.
