Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well. I am very excited to hear that club is hosting an event to celebrate popular food around the world.

I want you to include my country famous dish in global event which is Biryani. Biryani is very popular traditional dish of Pakistan. This is because of its rich flavours and varities.

Biryani is the combination of rice with any type of meat including mutton, beef or chicken. It also includes onions, greenchilli, lemon and potatoes. Pakistani famous basmati rice are widely used in biryani because of its taste and size.

Biryani is widely consumed in international market due to its history with subcontinent and some Arabs countries. So, in my opinion it will be inducing great value in an international event.

I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible and happy to provide you any additional information about this dish.

Yours faithfully,

Muhammad Atiq Zahir

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you offer Biryani, explain that it combines rice with meat and other ingredients, and give a reason for including it by referring to its popularity and cultural history. The reader can understand your position throughout, and the dish is described with relevant details such as basmati rice, onions and potatoes. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain more specifically what makes Biryani distinctive or appealing to event visitors, rather than relying mainly on broad claims about its popularity. The reason that it would add value to an international event is relevant, but could be supported with a concrete example, such as its regional variations or the way it is shared at celebrations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the event, offer the dish, describe its ingredients, explain its cultural relevance, and close politely. Paragraph breaks help separate these stages, and phrases such as “This is because” and “So, in my opinion” signal relationships between ideas. This gives the response a coherent progression. However, some links feel mechanical or unclear: “This is because of its rich flavours and varities” does not clearly connect to the preceding statement, and “So” is a rather informal transition into your recommendation. Use more precise links and make each paragraph develop one main point. The closing is appropriate, though the letter would feel more smoothly connected if the recommendation followed directly from the dish’s distinctive qualities.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant food and cultural vocabulary, including “traditional dish,” “rich flavours,” “basmati rice,” and “subcontinent,” which helps communicate the topic. There is some attempt at less common language, but several noticeable word-choice, collocation and spelling problems reduce precision: “country famous dish,” “varities,” “greenchilli,” and “inducing great value” are not natural or accurate expressions. “International market” is also an imprecise choice when discussing the dish’s presence across countries. Aim for standard collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise vocabulary for taste, preparation and cultural significance would help you describe Biryani with greater flexibility while keeping the letter natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You communicate the main ideas using a mixture of simple statements and some longer structures, such as “Biryani is the combination of rice with any type of meat including…” and the sentence explaining why basmati rice is used. However, grammatical control is uneven, and errors occur in basic sentence patterns as well as longer ones. Examples include the missing article in “club is hosting an event,” the structure “I want you to include my country famous dish,” and the agreement problem in “Pakistani famous basmati rice are widely used.” The final sentence, “happy to provide you any additional information,” also needs a clearer grammatical construction. Practise articles, possessives, subject–verb agreement and complete sentence patterns, then proofread each sentence for these features.
