Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Mr Luis,

I am writing this letter regarding the upcoming event to celebrate popular food from around the world, as one of your student i will be privileged if i will be given an opportunity to prepare a special local food in my state.

I am prepared to introduce a special food from my country, which is very nutritious and it is prepared mostly during an occasiona or special event.

The food is usually called local beans, the preparation starts a night before the occasion because the seed is very strong. After preparing the food for a long time, it allows the seed to be very soft before adding your ingredients. It is usually severd with assorted of meat, and a well prepared Stew.

This is an opportunity for me to showcase my people's meal to the world, and i strongly believes that our visitors will enjoy it.Because it is not the kind of meal you see daily or easily on the restaurant.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you offer to prepare a dish, describe its preparation and serving, and explain that it would showcase your culture and be unusual for visitors. The description of soaking the beans overnight and serving them with meat and stew gives the organiser relevant information. However, the dish remains vague: “local beans” does not identify its name or country of origin, and the explanation of its importance relies mainly on its rarity rather than a fuller cultural or culinary reason. The offer is also phrased indirectly (“if i will be given an opportunity”) rather than as a clear commitment. Naming the dish and developing these points would make the response more complete and specific.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: it opens with the purpose, moves to the proposed dish and its preparation, and ends by explaining why it belongs at the event. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages. Some connections between ideas are less smooth, however. The transition from “local beans” to the preparation details could be clearer, and “Because it is not the kind of meal…” is attached awkwardly to the preceding sentence. The repeated use of “special” and the long opening sentence also make the progression feel somewhat mechanical. Use clearer links between the dish’s description and its cultural value, and ensure each sentence is complete and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the basic proposal, with relevant terms such as “nutritious,” “ingredients,” “assorted,” and “occasion.” However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or imprecise, which makes parts of the description difficult to picture. “Local beans” does not identify the dish, “assorted of meat” is not a natural phrase, and “on the restaurant” is an unsuitable collocation. There are also spelling errors, including “severd” and “occasiona,” alongside inconsistent capitalisation. Choose precise food-related vocabulary and check common word partnerships; this would make the letter clearer and more natural without requiring unnecessarily complex language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which is very nutritious” and a time clause explaining that preparation starts the night before. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “one of your student i will be privileged if i will be given” has problems with plural agreement, capitalisation, and the conditional verb form; “i strongly believes” also has subject–verb disagreement. The sentence beginning “Because it is not…” is a fragment, while the opening sentence joins several ideas in a way that is difficult to control. Practise accurate conditional forms and sentence boundaries, then proofread agreement and punctuation.
