Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am a member of an International Students' club. The club is organising an event for celebrating famous food from all around the world. Therefore, I would love to participate in the event.

To commence with, I would like to make my country's popular food in the event of the club. I love cooking, while the popular dish of my country is also my favourite, so it will be effortless for me to make a delicious dish of India.

Additionally, the dish is vada pav with green chutney. It is quite popular street food of India. Moreover, the crucial ingredients in this dish are potatoes and Indian spices. Indian spices such as garam masala, cumin seeds powder and many other spices can make this dish incredible. In addition, green chutney make vada pav dish more tasty and spicy.

The vada pav dish should be included in the event because this dish have a positive connection with the people of India. Furthermore, the dish is eaten by each person all around my country. The dish is not much expensive and an individual can see vada pav every corner of my country. It will be proud for the people of India to showcase the dish to the whole world.

I am hoping to get a positive response from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Tasbiyah

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you offer to prepare an Indian dish, identify it as vada pav with green chutney, and explain its popularity and cultural significance. The description of potatoes and spices gives the organiser useful information, while the reasons that it is widely eaten and represents India support its inclusion. The ideas are relevant and extended, although some support is broad—for example, saying it is eaten by “each person” across the country overgeneralises, and the practical appeal of its affordability could be explained more specifically. The letter’s purpose and your willingness to contribute remain clear throughout. To strengthen the response further, develop one or two reasons with more precise detail, such as what makes the dish distinctive to visitors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter is arranged in a clear sequence: you introduce your offer, describe the dish, explain why it belongs at the event, and close politely. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “Moreover,” and “Furthermore” make relationships between ideas visible. This is a coherent overall arrangement, though the connectors sometimes feel mechanical or are used more often than needed. For example, several sentences in the description begin with additive transitions, while “To commence with” is rather formal for a friendly letter. Some repetition of “the dish” also makes the flow less natural. Use a wider range of referencing and occasional transitions that show cause or result, while allowing closely related sentences to connect without an explicit linker.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including food-specific terms such as “green chutney,” “garam masala,” and “cumin seeds,” which make the description concrete. Phrases such as “positive connection” and “showcase the dish” also show an attempt to express cultural significance. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “famous food,” “effortless for me to make,” and “more tasty.” Repetition of “dish” and “popular” also limits flexibility. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but more natural phrasing would make it sound more fluent and precise. Build your range by learning common collocations for describing a dish’s flavour, popularity, and cultural importance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, including a reason clause in “because this dish have a positive connection” and a relative clause in “spices … can make this dish incredible.” The overall meaning remains clear, but errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction keep control uneven. For example, “green chutney make” should have a singular verb, and “this dish have” should be “this dish has.” The phrase “It is quite popular street food” also needs an article, while “I am hoping to get” is less natural in this context than a direct future form. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and articles, and aim to produce a greater proportion of accurate complex sentences.
