Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Luis,

I wanted to write to you personally about adding a dish in an event. My name is Amaira Khanam, I am a member of 'an international student' club. The club is organising an event to celebrate popular food from around the world. You are the event organiser so, I would like to offer you to make a popular dish from my country.

Moreover, the dish is Chicken Biryani, it was a well-known dish from my country India, its popularly known by Hyderabadi Biryani, mostly it is known for its rich spices and ingredients, and its so delicious and fiery. I am suggesting you to add this dish at event, since, obviously we are conducting a popular food from around the world, all my clud members will love the food and want to try it therfore, I want to introduce a delicious food from my country that international residients could try it.

I would love to hear what you think.

Kind regards,

Amaira khanam.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you offer to prepare Chicken Biryani, identify it as a dish from India, and explain that club members and international residents could try it. The dish’s “rich spices and ingredients” and fiery flavour give the organiser some useful information. However, the description is brief, and the reason for including it is partly repetitive: saying members will “love the food” does not explain specifically what makes it a good choice for a world-food event. Develop the dish description with a detail about its ingredients or preparation, and make the event’s benefit clearer—for example, how it represents Indian cuisine or offers guests a distinctive taste. The letter is relevant and complete, though some ideas are less fully developed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter follows a sensible overall order: you introduce your purpose, present the dish and your reasons, then close politely. Paragraphing also helps distinguish the opening from the main information. Some links, however, feel mechanical or unclear. “Moreover” does not introduce a separate point naturally, while the long sentence beginning “I am suggesting you to add this dish” combines several ideas and makes their relationships harder to follow. The repeated use of “I” and “the dish” also limits the flow. Separate the description from the explanation, and use clearer links such as “It would suit the event because…” or “In addition, guests could…”. This would make the progression easier to follow while preserving your clear overall structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “popular dish,” “rich spices,” “ingredients,” and “fiery,” so the reader can understand the food you are proposing. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as naming “Chicken Biryani” and “Hyderabadi Biryani.” However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce naturalness: “offer you to make” is awkward, “popularly known by” is not idiomatic, and “clud,” “therfore,” and “residients” are misspelled. “Delicious” is repeated, and “adding a dish in an event” is less natural than a more precise phrase. Build a small range of accurate food and event expressions, and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, and the main message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors are evident, particularly in sentence boundaries and clause construction. “My name is Amaira Khanam, I am a member…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma; use a full stop or “and.” In “it was a well-known dish from my country India, its popularly known…,” the clauses are joined incorrectly, and the tense and sentence structure need revision. The phrase “I am suggesting you to add” also uses an incorrect verb pattern; write “I suggest adding” or “I would suggest that you include.” Practise accurate complex sentences and check articles, punctuation, and verb patterns when editing.
