Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I am writing to bring your attention about a very famous Indian dish which we should add in our international food event.
It is called Mustard green curry with corn bread.
Although, it is not easy to prepare this item as it takes about 1-2 hours. However, it is quite popular and visitors would love it due to its spicy taste and freshness. This dish mainly belongs to the northern India and consume during winter season. The recipe is quite simple to understand. It is primarily made with mustard leaves, combined with other greens like spinach and slow cooked with garlic and ginger for about one hour. We can also add green chilies and spices in it to make it more tangy in taste. We can eat this curry with corn bread along with yogurt drink.
I am entitled to request to add this foodstuffs in our event as it represents my country India. Moreover, it provides a considerable amount of nutritious and minerals which helps people to stay warm during winters.
I hope you will consider it for the food event and let me know if you need any further information regarding this recipe. Thank you for your time and consideration. I will look forward for your response.
Yours faithfully
Dany

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you offer to prepare an Indian dish, explain its ingredients and preparation, and give reasons for including it. The description of mustard greens, spinach, garlic and ginger makes the dish easy to picture, while its cultural connection and winter warmth provide relevant reasons. These ideas are generally extended and supported, which makes the response persuasive. To make the case even more fully developed, explain more specifically how the dish would add variety to the event or appeal to visitors with different tastes; the claim that visitors “would love it” is somewhat general. The purpose and polite tone remain clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information follows a sensible sequence: you introduce the dish, describe its preparation and serving, explain its cultural and nutritional value, and close with a polite offer to provide more information. Paragraphing helps distinguish the description from the reasons for inclusion. Linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “I hope” also guide the reader. However, some connections feel mechanical or unclear: “Although” followed by “However” creates an awkward contrast, and the shift from preparation time to popularity could be smoother. The final paragraph combines several purposes in one block. Use more natural transitions and separate the reasons from the closing request to make the progression more polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the letter, including food-related terms such as “mustard leaves,” “green chilies,” “spices,” and “yogurt drink,” as well as “represents my country” and “nutritious.” These choices communicate the dish and its significance. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural word choices and collocations, such as “bring your attention about,” “tangy in taste,” and “foodstuffs.” “A considerable amount of nutritious and minerals” also shows difficulty selecting the correct forms and combination of words. Aim for more natural expressions and precise food vocabulary; for example, describe the curry as “flavourful” or “slightly spicy” rather than using an unclear taste description.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which we should add” and a reason clause beginning “as it takes about 1–2 hours.” Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. In “This dish mainly belongs to the northern India and consume during winter season,” the verb form and sentence construction need correction; a clearer version is “This dish originates in northern India and is eaten during the winter.” The sentence beginning “Although” is also incorrectly followed by “However,” and “which helps people” does not agree with the plural idea “nutrients and minerals.” Check articles, verb forms, and agreement, while retaining the variety of sentence structures you already attempt.
