Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this as a member of an International Student's club to offer to make "dal dhokli" for upcoming event, which is a famous Gujarati dish from the west region of India.

Dal Dhokli is a combination of lentils curry and wheat chapatis. Preparation of curry starts with boiling lentils with basic spices such as turmeric, red chilly and coriander powder. Dough needs to be prepared along side and roll out rotis that will be added to the curry later. After mixing them, salt and sugar will be added to enhance the test, that's how iconic Gujarati's weekend lunch could be prepared. Natives take rice and salted lassi with dal Dhokli. I believe this should be included in to the event because it satisfies all test buds in individual and also provides enough glucose for a long term energy along with the protein.

I look forward to hearing back from you that you are willing to accept my request. I would appreciate if you could confirm before 2 days of the event.

Your Faithfully,

Darshil

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three points clearly: you offer to prepare dal dhokli, explain its ingredients and preparation, and give reasons for including it. The description of lentils, spices, and wheat rotis makes the dish understandable, while the reference to protein and energy supports your case. The response also maintains an appropriate, polite purpose for writing to Luis. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain more specifically what makes the dish distinctive or appealing to a diverse audience; the claim that it “satisfies all taste buds” is broad, and the nutritional point could be linked more directly to the event. A clearer, more natural request for confirmation would also strengthen the letter’s closing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear overall progression: you make the offer, describe the dish and its preparation, explain its value, and close by requesting a reply. The paragraphing helps distinguish the opening, main explanation, and closing. Linking expressions such as “After mixing them” and “I believe” guide the reader through the explanation, and the sequence of preparation is generally easy to follow. Some connections could be smoother: the sentence about rice and lassi feels added on rather than clearly connected to the dish’s appeal, and the long main paragraph combines several purposes. Consider separating the description from the reasons for inclusion and using clearer links between these ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a regional dish, including “lentils,” “spices,” “coriander powder,” and “protein.” These details help communicate the food’s ingredients and cultural context. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “iconic Gujarati’s weekend lunch,” though some choices are inaccurate or unnatural and reduce precision. For example, “test buds” does not convey the intended meaning, and “enhance the test” is not the appropriate phrase for improving flavour. Spelling and word-form slips such as “chilly” and “along side” also affect accuracy. Aim to check collocations and spelling, and choose precise food-related terms so your meaning sounds natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which is a famous Gujarati dish” and a sequence of instructions describing preparation. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in sentence construction and in the use of articles, prepositions, and agreement. For instance, “for upcoming event” needs an article, while “should be included in to the event” uses an incorrect preposition pattern. The sentence beginning “I would appreciate if” also needs a more complete grammatical construction. The long sentence about taste and energy would be clearer if divided into shorter clauses. Review article use and common verb patterns, then proofread sentence boundaries and punctuation.
