Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing in reponse to the upcoming international food event organised by our international student club. I would like to volunteer to prepare a famous indian dish called pav Bhaji for this special occasion.

Pav bhaji is one of the most populat street food in Mumbai, Maharashtra, india. It is a delicious combination of mashed vegetables, including potatoes, tomatoes, peas and cauliflower, cooked with a special blend of indian spices and butter. It is traditionally served with soft bread rolls called pav, which are toasted with butter, It is usually garnished with fresh chopped onion, coriander and a slice of lemon.

I believe this dish should be included in the event because it represents the rich food culture of india. Moreover, it is colourful, flavourful and enjoyed by people of different age groups. It would also give intenational students an opportunity to experience authentic indian street food. I would be happy to prepare it and explain its ingredient and traditional cooking method to other participants.

Please let me know if my suggestion can be included in the event. I look forward to your positive response.

Your faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.5

The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you offer to prepare pav bhaji, explain its ingredients and serving style, and give reasons for including it. The description is particularly well developed, with details such as mashed vegetables, toasted pav, and the onion, coriander, and lemon garnish. Your reasons—that it represents Indian food culture and is enjoyed by different age groups—are relevant and supported. The offer to explain the ingredients and cooking method also adds a useful contribution to the event. To make the response even more complete, you could briefly explain how the dish might suit a shared event, for example by noting that it can be served in portions for visitors to sample. Overall, the purpose and tone are consistently clear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

The information follows a clear and appropriate sequence: you introduce your offer, describe the dish, explain its value to the event, and close by asking for a response. Paragraphing separates these functions effectively, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “It would also” help connect your reasons. The final request and sign-off provide a suitable ending. To strengthen cohesion further, make sure punctuation consistently separates items in the ingredient list and avoids joining distinct sentences with a comma, as in “butter, It is usually garnished.” A slightly smoother transition between the description and the reasons for inclusion would also help, though the progression is already easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing food and its cultural significance, including “mashed vegetables,” “blend of Indian spices,” “garnished,” “authentic,” and “traditional cooking method.” These choices make the dish easy to imagine and give the letter an appropriate tone. There are occasional spelling and word-choice slips, including “reponse,” “populat,” and “intenational,” as well as the less natural phrase “one of the most popular street food.” Capitalisation of “Indian” and “India” should also be consistent. These errors do not prevent understanding, but careful proofreading and more precise phrasing would improve control. For example, “a popular street food in Mumbai” is more natural and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes a useful mix of sentence forms, from the direct offer “I would like to volunteer” to longer sentences explaining ingredients and reasons. Most ideas are expressed clearly, and the relative clause “which are toasted with butter” is handled effectively. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “one of the most popular street food,” the noun should be plural (“street foods”), and “explain its ingredient” needs a plural form (“ingredients”). The sentence beginning “It is traditionally served…” ends with a comma before a new sentence, so use a full stop. The closing “Your faithfully” should be “Yours faithfully.” These are generally minor and do not obscure meaning; more consistent checking of agreement, number, and sentence boundaries would improve accuracy.
