Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing well! I am writing this letter to suggest a food item that can be included in an event organsied by International Students' club.
I would like to make an offer to add my country's popular dish named Shahi Paneer. It is highly famous and most eatable dish in both Asia and North America continent.
Generally, this dish has lot of gravy which is prepared from tomatoes, onions and spices and herbs that tastes spectacular. It also include cubes of cheese which are soft and smushy in its nature. Moreover, this dish is served in every party, marriage and small get together back in my country.
It would be great to include this dish in our event as it will become the number one selling dish. Additionally, whole nearby community belongs to Asia and nort america, they will love and appreciate it the most.
I hope you like my suggestion and add it to the menu.
Yours truly,
Preet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you offer to prepare Shahi Paneer, describe its tomato, onion, spice and herb gravy with cheese cubes, and explain its popularity at celebrations and appeal to nearby communities. The reader can understand your recommendation and your positive position remains clear. The reasons are relevant, though the claim that it will be “the number one selling dish” and that the whole nearby community will appreciate it is broad rather than supported with specific detail. To strengthen the response further, explain what makes the dish distinctive—for example, its flavour or how it represents your country—and give a more measured reason for its likely appeal to event guests.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce your purpose, present the dish and its ingredients, then explain why it belongs at the event and close politely. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Additionally” make the relationships between ideas visible. Some connections are less smooth, however: the shift from describing the dish to saying it is “the number one selling dish” is abrupt, and “Additionally” introduces a broad claim without explaining how it follows from the previous point. Use more precise links and develop each reason in sequence. The letter format is appropriate, though a more direct opening could make the purpose immediately clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the dish and its context, including “gravy,” “spices and herbs,” “cubes,” and “get together.” There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “tastes spectacular.” However, several word choices and collocations are noticeably inaccurate or unnatural, including “most eatable,” “make an offer to add,” and “smushy in its nature.” “Organised” is also misspelled as “organsied,” and “North America” is inconsistently written. These choices make parts of the letter less fluent, even though the main meaning remains understandable. Aim for natural food-related phrasing and check spelling and capitalization; for example, describe the dish as widely enjoyed rather than “most eatable.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more developed sentences, including the relative clause “which is prepared from tomatoes, onions and spices and herbs” and the sentence beginning “It would be great to include this dish…” The overall meaning is generally clear, but errors in agreement, articles and sentence construction recur. For example, “this dish has lot of gravy” needs an article, “It also include cubes” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “whole nearby community belongs to Asia and nort america” is not formed accurately. The long final reason also needs clearer grammatical structure. Practise checking singular and plural subjects, articles, and complete sentence patterns, while keeping some complex sentences in your writing.
