Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I appreciate you taking the time to read this letter. I am writing to suggest you to add on one of the most popular dishes of India. I would be grateful if you would give me this opportunity as I always dreamt of representing my country in one of the international events. I love interacting with the people of different culture and traditions especially to share my culture, traditional food and happiness with them.

The dish I would like to include is Dhokla. It is originated from the state of Gujarat in India. It is made from chickpea flour fermented batter. Moreover, it is healthy snack because it is steamed rather than fried, and rich in protein.

The reason, I would like to introduce this dish to the everyone because is it is flavorful and related to the cutural roots of India. It allows people to experience different species and flavours of my country. I hope will take my suggestion into consideration.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Yours sincerely,

Jasmeen

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you offer to prepare Dhokla, explain that it is made from fermented chickpea-flour batter and steamed, and give reasons for including it, such as its connection to Indian culture and its appeal to visitors. The letter maintains a clear, appropriate purpose and includes a suitable closing. The dish’s health benefits and cultural significance provide relevant support, although the explanation of why it would suit the event could be extended with a more specific detail—for example, how it is served or why guests from different countries might enjoy it. Overall, the response fulfils the task and supports its main ideas, with some scope to develop the justification further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce your offer, describe the dish, explain its value, and close politely. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “The reason” signal relationships between ideas. The progression is generally easy to follow, though some connections are less smooth, particularly the shift from your personal motivation to the dish description. The final paragraph also combines the reason for including Dhokla with the hope that Luis will consider the suggestion, making the explanation feel slightly compressed. A clearer transition and more precise links between the dish’s qualities and the event would make the cohesion more flexible and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the letter, including relevant terms such as “fermented batter,” “steamed,” “protein,” and “cultural roots.” These choices help explain the dish and its significance. There are also some inaccurate or awkward expressions, including “suggest you to add on,” “different species,” and “to the everyone”; these reduce naturalness, although the intended meaning is generally understandable. The spelling error “cutural” and the repeated use of “dish” and “country” also limit precision. To strengthen your vocabulary, focus on accurate collocations and choose words that express the intended idea precisely—for example, “spices” rather than “species,” and “flavours” when describing taste.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the conditional request “I would be grateful if you would give me this opportunity” and the relative clause “which is steamed rather than fried.” However, some grammatical errors remain. For example, “I always dreamt” would be more naturally expressed as “I have always dreamed,” while “It is originated from” should be “It originates from.” The sentence “because is it is flavorful” contains a faulty word order and repetition, and “I hope will take my suggestion” is missing its subject. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the letter, but more careful control of verb forms, sentence structure, and complete clauses is needed.
