Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
Hope all is good at your end.
I came to know that an event is being organised by the club to taste and celebrate popular dishes from different countries. I am writing this letter to propose making "Koshari" a popular dish from Egypt.
Koshari is a mixture of brown lentils, pasta, rice and fried onions, which is then covered by tomato sauce. It is very delicious particularly when served hot.
I believe Koshari should be included in the event as it will be a unique addition. One more significant advantage is that it suits vegan diets. It also offers a great nutritional value as it contains protein, carbohydrate and a variety of vitamins. The most important thing about Koshari is that it represents Egypt, a well-known country that everyone loves.
I hope you accept my dish proposal and looking forward to attending this very special event where we can discover more about numerous countries from around the world.
sincerely,
Olivia

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you offer to make koshari, explain its ingredients, and give reasons for including it. The description—“brown lentils, pasta, rice and fried onions” with tomato sauce—helps the organiser understand the dish, while its suitability for vegan diets and nutritional value provide relevant support. Your position remains clear throughout. The reasons are extended enough to be persuasive, although the claim that Egypt is “a well-known country that everyone loves” is broad and does not explain specifically how the dish would represent Egyptian food culture. Replacing this generalisation with a detail about koshari’s popularity or significance in Egypt would make the support more convincing and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce the event and your proposal, describe the dish, explain its benefits, and close with a hope that it will be accepted. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “One more significant advantage” help signal the next reason. This gives the response a coherent arrangement. However, some connections feel slightly mechanical, particularly the sequence of reasons introduced by “One more significant advantage” and “The most important thing.” The final sentence also combines your request, anticipation of attending, and the event’s purpose in one long unit. Use more varied, natural transitions and separate the closing ideas to make cohesion smoother and more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and includes relevant food and event terms such as “brown lentils,” “fried onions,” “vegan diets,” and “nutritional value.” These choices make the dish and its appeal understandable. You also attempt more formal expressions, including “propose” and “significant advantage,” but some phrasing is imprecise or unnatural: “to taste and celebrate popular dishes” would be more naturally expressed as celebrating or sampling them, and “a great nutritional value” is not the usual collocation. “Everyone loves” is also too sweeping for this context. Aim for more precise collocations and a slightly wider range of natural expressions for describing cultural significance and food.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “a mixture …, which is then covered by tomato sauce” and the conditional-style explanation of why the dish should be included. Meaning remains clear throughout, and several sentences are controlled. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. “Hope all is good at your end” omits the subject, which is acceptable in informal conversation but less complete in a letter; “I am looking forward to attending” needs the subject after “and” in the closing sentence. Also, begin “Sincerely” with a capital letter, and avoid joining several closing ideas into one sentence. Checking sentence completeness and punctuation would improve accuracy.
