Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear luis,

I hope you are doing well .I am writing to suggest a traditional Indian dish for our upcoming international food festival .I would be delighted to prepare something special for the students.

I would love to make Butter Chicken which is one of the most popular dishes in North India. It is delicious meal that is enjoyed by people of different age groups.

This dish is prepared using tender pieces of chicken cooked in a creamy tomato based sauce with butter and aromatic spices. It has a rich flavour and a slighty spicy taste. it is generally served with naan bread or steamed rice which makes it a complete and satisfying meal .

I believe this dish should be included in the event because it represents Indian food culture. Moreover students from different countries will get an opportunity to experience authentic Indian flavours . I am sure many people would enjoy trying it, especially those who love delicious and flavourful food.

I would be happy to prepare it for everyone. Please let me know if you need any further information.

Best wishes,

Manjot

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter fulfils all three requirements clearly: you offer to prepare Butter Chicken, explain its ingredients and serving options, and give a reason for including it by linking it to Indian food culture and the chance for students to try authentic flavours. The description—“tender pieces of chicken cooked in a creamy tomato based sauce”—is specific and helps the organiser understand the dish. Your offer is also clear and courteous. The rationale is relevant, though the final point that people will enjoy “delicious and flavourful food” is quite general and repeats the appeal already mentioned. To strengthen an already well-developed response, make that justification more distinctive, for example by explaining how the dish could introduce guests to a particular regional tradition or be adapted for different tastes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: opening and offer, dish description, reasons for inclusion, then a polite closing. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “because” make the relationships between ideas easy to follow. The reader can readily identify each part of the task. Cohesion is generally effective, although some links are quite predictable, and the description could connect more smoothly to the event’s appeal—for instance, by explaining how the naan or rice would make the dish easy to share. Check spacing around punctuation, as in “well .I” and “festival .I”; these presentation slips interrupt the otherwise clear flow. More varied, natural transitions and tighter links between details would make the organisation feel more polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “traditional,” “aromatic spices,” “rich flavour,” and “authentic Indian flavours.” These choices communicate the dish’s character clearly, and the tone is appropriate for a friendly letter to an organiser. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, though some phrasing is repetitive or imprecise: “delicious” and “flavourful” convey similar ideas, while “complete and satisfying meal” is a familiar, general description. Spelling and word-form slips such as “slighty” and “tomato based” reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise food-related vocabulary and check compound modifiers; this would add flexibility and control without making the letter sound unnatural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes both straightforward sentences and more developed structures, such as “which is one of the most popular dishes in North India” and the clause beginning “which makes it a complete and satisfying meal.” Most ideas remain easy to understand, and the closing is appropriately phrased. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain: “It is delicious meal” needs an article, and “it is generally served” should begin with a capital letter after the full stop. There are also inconsistent spaces around full stops, and the sentence “Moreover students…” needs a comma after the introductory linker. Review articles, sentence boundaries, and punctuation carefully. Greater consistency in these areas, alongside the complex structures already attempted, would improve accuracy.
