Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to show my willingness to participate in the upcoming event of International Students' club to celebrate popular food from around the world. I would like to make a chicken biryani and present in this event.

I have been a part of this International Students' club for some time. Therefore, I would not let go off this opportunity to represent my country which is specifically famous for its food. I would like to make a popular dish consisting of rice, chicken, and special biryani masala. This dish is made by boiling rice and preparing chicken masala seprately and eventually food colour added into it, giving it a delicious look.

This Biryani is famous all over the Pakistan and it is the favourite dish of most of the pakistani people. Therefore, this dish should be in the event because it well represent Pakistan and its culture which is rich in food.

I hope you would consider my request and allow me to participate.

Yours sincerely,

Akif Mazhar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you offer to prepare chicken biryani, describe its ingredients and preparation, and explain its connection to Pakistan. The letter also maintains a suitable, polite tone, with a clear request for Luis to consider. The explanation that the dish represents Pakistani culture is relevant, though the reason for including it is somewhat general; you could strengthen it by explaining what makes its flavour, preparation, or popularity distinctive for visitors. The cooking description gives useful detail, but the process could be clearer and more precise. Overall, the task is fully addressed and the main ideas are supported, with some tendency to generalise in the justification. (Eight words copied from the task prompt were not counted.)

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall structure: you introduce your offer, describe the dish, explain its significance, and close politely. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and links such as “Therefore” and “I hope” make the relationships between ideas apparent. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall arrangement and shows some features of stronger progression. However, “Therefore” is used to connect ideas that are not always clearly cause and effect, and the second paragraph combines your club membership, national representation, ingredients, and cooking method. Grouping the dish description separately from your personal motivation would make the progression more controlled and the links less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the topic, with relevant terms such as “chicken biryani,” “rice,” “masala,” and “represent my country.” The reader can understand the dish and its cultural importance. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate, which keeps expression from being consistently natural. For example, “show my willingness” and “present in this event” are awkward in this context, while “food colour added into it” is unclear. There are also spelling and form errors, including “seprately” and “pakistani.” Aim for more precise phrases for offering participation and describing preparation, and check spelling and capitalization of food and nationality terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, including “Therefore, I would not let go off this opportunity…” and the sentence describing how the rice and chicken are prepared. The main message remains understandable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms occur often enough to affect fluency. For example, “I would like to make a chicken biryani and present in this event” lacks a clear grammatical link between the actions, and “eventually food colour added into it” is missing an auxiliary verb. There are also problems with articles and prepositions in “all over the Pakistan” and “a part of this International Students' club.” Practise building accurate complex sentences and proofreading for complete verb phrases.
