IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 9.0)

The prospect of a future in which all vehicles operate without human drivers is no longer confined to science fiction. With rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and sensor technology, it is entirely plausible that cars, buses, and trucks will eventually become fully autonomous, reducing human passengers to mere occupants. While this development raises legitimate concerns, I firmly believe that the advantages of driverless vehicles far outweigh their potential drawbacks.

On the one hand, the widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles presents several significant benefits. The most compelling advantage is safety. Human error—such as distraction, fatigue, and impaired driving—is responsible for over 90% of road accidents. Driverless vehicles, equipped with advanced sensors and real-time decision-making algorithms, are not susceptible to these limitations and can react far more quickly than any human driver. Consequently, the number of traffic fatalities could be drastically reduced. In addition, autonomous vehicles promise greater efficiency. They can communicate with each other and with traffic infrastructure to optimize routes, reduce congestion, and minimize fuel consumption. For instance, coordinated platooning of driverless trucks on highways could significantly lower carbon emissions, contributing to environmental sustainability.

Furthermore, driverless technology offers substantial social and economic advantages. For elderly individuals and people with disabilities, autonomous vehicles represent a newfound freedom and independence, enabling them to travel safely without relying on others. From a broader perspective, the shift away from private car ownership towards shared autonomous fleets could free up vast amounts of urban space currently used for parking lots, transforming cities into greener, more pedestrian-friendly environments. This reallocation of space could enhance the quality of urban life in ways that are difficult to quantify but are undeniably positive.

Nevertheless, critics argue that the transition to driverless vehicles would inevitably lead to massive job losses among professional drivers, including taxi drivers, bus operators, and truckers. This is a valid concern, as millions of livelihoods worldwide depend on driving. However, history has shown that technological revolutions, while disruptive, also create new industries and employment opportunities. The rise of autonomous vehicles would likely generate demand for entirely new roles, such as fleet managers, remote monitoring operators, and maintenance specialists specializing in autonomous systems. With proper government support and retraining programs, displaced workers could transition into these emerging fields.

In conclusion, while the transition to a completely driverless future is not without its challenges—particularly concerning employment and cybersecurity—the potential benefits are too significant to ignore. The dramatic improvements in road safety, environmental efficiency, and social inclusivity present a compelling case for embracing this innovation. Therefore, I am convinced that, on balance, the advantages of autonomous vehicles greatly outweigh their disadvantages, and humanity should proceed with cautious optimism towards this inevitable transformation.
