Student answer (Band 7.0)

Making driverless cars will be one big achievement in the human history. It will make the work much more easier for the humans. Computers replacing humans in driving cars, buses and trucks is as difficult as amazing it sounds. Tons of research and development have to be done to achieve this kind of technology. Even if this technology is developed in the future there will be some advantages as well disadvantages to it.

Starting with advantages, after the outbreak of covid people have started taking public health and hygiene very seriously. Making public transportations like cabs and buses driverless will reduce the risk of spreading any disease. Being driverless, it also reduces the chances of abduction or kidnapping done by the cab drivers. Misbehaving drivers towards female passengers is a serious issue in India, driverless taxis can help against this issue. It also reduces roadrage done by people on the road. By this, people will feel peaceful while on the road.

However, everything has some disadvantages to it. The whole system will be computer based. It has to be completely bug-free or else the people in the car will be at risk. Another problem will be of being hacked or virus, this system will be computer based making it an easy target for hackers and people to feed in viruses. Now in India, roads tend to have potholes and stray dogs and cows moving on the road. The cars, buses and trucks should be able to detect these kind obstacles and avoid them.

Regardless of these advantages and disadvantages, these kind of technology is already seen in cars made by Tesla and taxis have been seen in San Francisco, US. Until now, not much of incidents have been reported making it a better alternative but for India and other similar countries, much more research and development is needed. I would like to conclude that even though this technology is amazing to hear but we can't always rely on computers, a human touch is needed and I feel here, on roads it is needed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both advantages and disadvantages. You clearly state your position in the conclusion, although the introduction could be more explicit regarding your stance. The ideas are relevant, such as the focus on public health, safety, and the specific challenges of infrastructure in India. However, some points, like the mention of 'road rage,' are introduced but not fully developed. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is supported by a clear explanation or example that directly links back to the central question of whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the topic. You use transition signals like 'Starting with advantages' and 'However' to guide the reader. While the progression is generally clear, some cohesive devices are used in a slightly mechanical way, and the referencing could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the discussion of technology and the conclusion feels a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that sentences flow more naturally into one another would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'outbreak,' 'infrastructure,' and 'alternative.' There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'making the work much more easier' (which contains a double comparative) and 'amazing to hear.' Additionally, some word choices are a bit informal or imprecise, such as 'done by' or 'feed in viruses.' To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic vocabulary. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated synonyms will help you move toward a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'these kind of technology' (should be 'this kind of technology') and 'much more easier.' You also have some issues with article usage and pluralization, such as 'the risk of spreading any disease' and 'not much of incidents.' While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of determiners to improve your accuracy.
