Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is believed that in the future all vehicles will be operate without drivers. As a result, people will only travel as a passenger. Although it can lead to some problems, I believe that the advantages are greater than disadvantages.

On the one hand, driverless cars could have major drawbacks. The biggest concern is job loss. Millions of people, such as taxi driver, bus drivers and taxi drivers may become unemployed because their work will be replaced by technology. Another drawback is that these driverless cars are attached with computers and software. If there is a technical failure, accidents or traffic problem could occur. In addition, may not trust driverless cars, especially during the early stages of their use.

On the other hand, there are many advantages of driverless cars. Firstly, driverless cars are likely to have less roads accidents and because most crashes occur by human error. For instance, using mobile phones or driving while drunk or tired. Furthermore, older people and individuals with disabilities will enjoy greater independence because they will be able to travel alone without relying on others.

In conclusion, driverless car may cause unemployment and raise concern about technology, I believe that their benefits are more significant. As driverless cars can reduce roads traffic and accidents and safe time. People can travel safely without any danger and could enjoy more as it will be convenient for them. Therefore, I strongly agree that advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both advantages and disadvantages, maintaining a clear position throughout. However, the essay falls short of the 250-word minimum requirement (241 words), which negatively impacts the development of ideas. While the main points regarding job loss and safety are relevant, they are somewhat under-developed. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and lacks a final, strong synthesis of the arguments. To improve, you should expand on your examples and ensure your word count meets the minimum threshold to allow for a more thorough exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with a standard introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel a bit forced. The referencing is generally clear, but the connection between sentences could be smoother to achieve a more natural progression of ideas. Overall, the structure is sufficient to follow the argument, but it lacks the sophisticated, flexible use of cohesive devices required for higher bands.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'unemployed', 'human error', and 'disabilities'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'attached with computers' (should be 'equipped with') and 'safe time' (should be 'save time'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, and there is a lack of more sophisticated or precise academic language. To reach a higher band, focus on using more varied and precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'will be operate' (should be 'will operate' or 'will be operated'), 'less roads accidents' (should be 'fewer road accidents'), and 'most crashes occur by human error' (should be 'occur due to'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but these persistent errors in verb forms and prepositions indicate a need for more careful proofreading. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy will help improve this score.
