IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.
Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In modern era, all the vehicles such as car, buses and trucks will be Robot-driven, meaning no human driver required. In my opinion, disadvantages of this phenomena outweigh its advantages in the terms of reduction in employment rates, software failure or high cost of maintenance.
The primary advantage of self-operated vehicle is that there is improved mobility for elderly and disabled persons. They do not have to rely on someone for travelling. This is to say that they feel more independent to go anywhere by their own without asking for help from the others.
Despite having advantages its disadvantages cannot be denied. Firstly, due to the introduction of AI-Powered vehicles there will be a huge loss to the taxi drivers, truck drivers because for some people driving is the only source of livelihood. The rate of employment will be shattered as robot will work on the place of humans. As a result, jobs of many will be in risk.
Moreover, this will also be a financial burden on the buyer of such vehicles as they are built with high level of technology and will demanded proper maintenance. It seems more like imposing the financial burden on the buyer. In addition, there will be increase in accidents because of the software failure or any cyber attack on the system and this can surely be a reason of accident.
In conclusion, I reaffirm that there are some advantages of automatic cars but disadvantages of these vehicles cannot be neglected because of high cost of maintenance, risk of accidents and loss to jobs of many drivers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. The ideas are relevant, covering mobility for the elderly, employment concerns, and financial/safety risks. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the disadvantages are supported with specific points, the advantage section is quite brief and could have been extended with more detail. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, maintaining a consistent stance throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that the advantages are explored with the same depth as the disadvantages to provide a more balanced and comprehensive argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'The primary advantage', 'Despite', 'Firstly', and 'Moreover' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the link between the introduction and the first body paragraph is functional but could be more sophisticated. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is generally clear, though some sentences within paragraphs could be better connected to enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'AI-Powered', 'livelihood', and 'cyber attack'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'this phenomena' (should be 'this phenomenon') and 'shattered as robot will work on the place of humans' (should be 'replaced by robots'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more precise and varied vocabulary would elevate the response. Focusing on collocations and more academic phrasing would help improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the taxi drivers'), subject-verb agreement ('robot will work'), and pluralization ('car, buses and trucks'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'it seems more like imposing the financial burden on the buyer'. Punctuation is generally correct, but the frequency of minor errors in grammar prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would be beneficial.
