Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The essay addresses the prompt by discussing both advantages and disadvantages of driverless vehicles. However, the position is not consistently clear; while the introduction mentions discussing both sides, the conclusion is somewhat contradictory and lacks a strong, unified stance. Some ideas, such as the mention of 'pediatricians' (likely meaning pedestrians), are underdeveloped or slightly off-topic. The response covers the main requirements, but the depth of analysis is limited, and the argument lacks a cohesive flow that would justify a higher score. To improve, ensure your position is clearly stated in the introduction and maintained throughout the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression between ideas is often mechanical or disjointed. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with' and 'On the other hand', but they are sometimes used incorrectly or in a repetitive manner. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the transition between the pros and cons is abrupt. The paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks the necessary flow to guide the reader smoothly through the argument. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would significantly enhance the coherence of the essay.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'automobiles department' instead of 'automotive industry' and 'made them relief' instead of 'provided relief'. The term 'pediatricians' is used incorrectly when 'pedestrians' was clearly intended. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'autonomous vehicles' and 'traffic congestions', the overall control is inconsistent. To improve, focus on learning collocations and ensuring that words are used in their correct context rather than relying on direct translations or imprecise synonyms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'there is drastic changes'), incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'will improved road safety'), and punctuation errors. Many sentences are fragmented or lack proper structure, such as 'To reduce the road accident of collisions.' While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and proofreading for basic errors would be highly beneficial.
