In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is expecting that in the future all the transport vehicles like cars, buses and trucks will be automated means there is not any driver needed. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers. I think there are more advantages of this innovation that outweigh the disadvantages. In coming paragraphs i can discuss both of my thoughts or experience.

One of the major advantages of driverless vehicles is that they can make road safer human driver sometimes make mistakes they do not follow the rules of driving or instructions also they were tired, sleepy if they come from a long route. Nowadays many accidents happen from drunk drivers and using mobile phones while driving they can risk their own and others life. On the other hand automated cars have programming installed in their system about rules and regulations of driving and road safety. This could contain a stop in major accidents that happen on the roads.

Furthermore, if we discuss the disadvantages of this science development it can end many people's job which mainly depends on driving like the taxi drivers, bus drivers they are not more needed if vehicles operate without human control. Many of them only skilled in driving and have not so much other skills on which they can work and earn money. This can seriously effect them and result of increasing poverty and unemployment. In addition there is possibility that technical problems and computer errors could cause major accidents if the system suddenly stops working, passengers may be placed in dangerous situation.

In conclusion Driverless vehicles may contain unemployment and could have technical problems. Nevertheless I believe their benefits particularly improved road safety outweighs these disadvantages. With better technology and proper safety rules driverless transport could become a useful part of everyday life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas are relevant, covering safety benefits and economic/technical drawbacks. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about unemployment is mentioned but not fully explored with specific examples or deeper analysis. The introduction is a bit informal ('In coming paragraphs i can discuss...'), and the conclusion is slightly repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure that each main point is supported by more detailed explanation or illustrative examples to fully develop the argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'One of the major advantages,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and there are instances where sentence structure impacts flow, such as the run-on sentences in the second paragraph ('human driver sometimes make mistakes they do not follow...'). Referencing is generally clear, but the overall cohesion would benefit from a wider variety of linking words and more sophisticated paragraph transitions to improve the logical flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'automated,' 'innovation,' and 'technical problems.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'this science development' instead of 'technological development' and 'contain unemployment' instead of 'cause unemployment.' The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding the range of synonyms and collocations would significantly improve the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding punctuation, subject-verb agreement, and tense consistency (e.g., 'they were tired' instead of 'they are tired'). Many sentences are run-on or lack necessary punctuation, which makes them difficult to parse. For example, 'human driver sometimes make mistakes they do not follow the rules...' should be broken into separate sentences or joined with proper conjunctions. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the essay from reaching a higher band.
