Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the contemporary world, technological advancements have significantly transformed our lives. Automated driverless vehicles are very popular among everyone. In the coming years, to operate vehicles on road, there will be no human intervention required. Also the people travelling in them will be passengers. In the subsequent paragraphs, I will discuss the pros and cons for this.

One of the foremost benefits of driverless mode of transport is that, it helps individuals to be more relaxed and spend leisure time. While travelling a person do not need to be highly attentive. However, one can read book, prepare instant meals, sip tea or coffee with snacks and listen to music, which help them to spend time with family while travelling and listening to music helps them to relax their mind. For instance, a person travelling in a self-driving car could use the journey to read a book or have a conversation with family members instead of concentrating on driving.

On the other hand, completely rely on automated cars, buses and trucks puts human life in danger. On daily bases, millions of people travel by public transport, any malfunctioning in software could harm the lives of several humans. Highly depended on such vehicles could be life threatening for a person who is travelling in public transport such as buses or either their owned vehicle. For example, if the navigation system or sensors of a driverless bus or car suddenly malfunction, the vehicle could fail to detect an obstacle or respond appropriately, potentially causing a serious accident and putting the lives of passengers at risk. Therefore, despite the convenience offered by driverless transport, technical failures can make excessive impact on these vehicles and serious threat to passenger safety.

In conclusion, driverless vehicles provide several benefits and convenience. However, a small defect, software malfunction or file corruptions potentially cause a life threatening situation. Therefore, I believe disadvantages outweigh more than advantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout, concluding that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. The ideas are relevant, such as the benefit of leisure time versus the risk of software failure. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the second paragraph lists several leisure activities (reading, eating, listening to music) that essentially convey the same point. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on the implications of these points rather than listing examples. The conclusion is clear, though it could be more nuanced by acknowledging the potential for future technological improvements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the advantages and disadvantages. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'In the contemporary world,' 'One of the foremost benefits,' and 'On the other hand.' However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'travelling' and 'music' in the second paragraph. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, though some referencing could be more precise to avoid ambiguity in the discussion of public versus private transport.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common items like 'contemporary world,' 'technological advancements,' and 'human intervention.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'completely rely on' (should be 'relying completely on') and 'make excessive impact' (which is not a standard collocation). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band. Expanding your range of academic collocations would significantly improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'a person do not need' (subject-verb agreement), 'Highly depended on such vehicles' (should be 'High dependence on'), and 'on daily bases' (should be 'on a daily basis'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of participial phrases. The punctuation is generally accurate, but ensure that you are using complex structures with greater precision to avoid the minor errors currently present.
