IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In future, there will be no need for a driver to operate any type of vehicle because most cars , buses and trucks will be driverless. The only living being in the car will be the passengers travelling in it. This aspect of transportation offers significant number of advantages such as reduction in number of accidents and higher passenger satisfaction while the disadvantages are comparatively less in number including less jobs for drivers.

The AI assisted vehicles will be connected to each other via radio or ultrasonic waves so they would detect the presence of any other vehicle nearby. This will make these car more safer as compared to the driver instructed cars so there will be a huge decline in the frequency of road accidents. It is evidenced by a study at BMW where an AI instructed car detected a pedestrian 60 seconds before an experienced driver when both were at same speed. The driverless cars will also proved to be more convenient and less demanding as no one would have to learn how to drive a car or truck. A beginner could be able top operate it by just giving instructions about his destination.

On the contrary, driverless vehicles would not be able to cope with the situation that needs logical reasoning like it is reported in a study in Nigeria that if breaks of a car or a truck fail, and a school bus and an elderly lady come in front of vehicle a driver would try to save children in bus while AI would remain stunned and unresponsive.

In conclusion, I would like to say that although advantages are leading in number but its disadvantages outweigh because commercializing driverless cars will risk human life

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all parts of the task by discussing both advantages and disadvantages and providing a clear personal position. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide a specific example regarding BMW, the argument regarding the disadvantages is based on a hypothetical scenario that lacks depth. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting points are more thoroughly explained and balanced. Your conclusion is clear, but it contradicts your earlier statement that advantages are more numerous, which creates a slight inconsistency in your overall position. Strengthening the logical flow of your arguments would improve your score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'On the contrary' and 'In conclusion', to link your thoughts. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. Additionally, some transitions between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall flow. For instance, the transition between the benefits of AI and the convenience argument could be better integrated. Overall, the structure is coherent, but more sophisticated linking words would enhance the readability.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'unresponsive', 'commercializing', and 'frequency'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'driver instructed cars' instead of 'human-driven vehicles' and 'advantages are leading in number' which is not idiomatic. You also have minor errors in phrasing, such as 'significant number of advantages'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'make these car more safer' (should be 'make these cars safer'), 'will also proved' (should be 'will also prove'), and 'top operate' (typo). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are some missing articles and minor errors in verb tense consistency. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and article usage would be beneficial.
