IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is predicted that all future vehicles, including cars, buses, and trucks, will operate without human drivers, carrying only passengers. In my opinion, the safety and efficiency advantages of this technological shift far outweigh the potential disadvantages.

On the one hand, the main disadvantage of driverless vehicles is the negative impact on employment. Millions of professional drivers, such as taxi drivers, truck drivers, and bus captains, could lose their jobs and struggle to find new work. Additionally, technology is not always perfect. If a computer system faces a technical glitch or a software error, it could cause sudden vehicle breakdowns or even severe accidents on the road.

On the other hand, the advantages of autonomous vehicles are much more significant. First, driverless cars will greatly improve road safety. Most road accidents today happen because of human errors, such as speeding, driving while tired, or being distracted by mobile phones. Computers do not get tired or distracted, which will save many human lives. Second, these smart vehicles can communicate with each other to manage traffic flow. This will reduce traffic jams in big cities and make daily travel much faster and smoother for passengers.

n conclusion, although driverless transportation will cause job losses for drivers and carry some technical risks, the benefits are much greater. The massive improvements in human safety and the reduction of city traffic jams make driverless vehicles a positive development for the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The essay addresses both the advantages and disadvantages of driverless vehicles, maintaining a clear position throughout. However, the response is under the 250-word minimum requirement, which limits the depth of the arguments. While the points regarding employment and safety are relevant, they are somewhat brief and could have been extended with more specific examples or a more nuanced discussion of the societal implications. Because the response is 14 words short of the minimum, it fails to fully develop the ideas to the extent expected for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Additionally' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent, though the brevity of the response makes the flow feel slightly abrupt in places.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. You use some good topic-specific collocations such as 'technological shift', 'technical glitch', and 'manage traffic flow'. While the range is adequate, it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band score. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choice is precise enough to convey your meaning clearly throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use conditional sentences ('If a computer system faces...') and relative clauses effectively. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors that impede communication. Punctuation is used correctly, and the sentence construction is stable. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice constructions or more varied subordinate clauses, to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
