IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Cars, buses and trucks are likely to be automated in the future and only passengers are present in these vehicles when commuting. Although driveless vehicles have some drawbacks, I believe that its benefits outweigh the drawbacks because it reduces human error and improves productivity.

Conveyance without drivers are becoming popular, as technology and Artificial Intelligence are advancing. AI has very quick reaction time and it is also very precise and accurate, hence companies such as Tesla are using AI to make vehicles driverless, which leads to less traffic collisions and better road safety. For example, a research states that there are 30% less chances of traffic accidents of autonomous cars as compared to tradition vehicles with driver. Furthermore, when people are travelling in automated car, they can do their work or study in the mean time without having concern about driving.

The main disadvantage of self-driving automobiles is that unemployment will increase due to this. If all vehicles will become unmanned in the future, then there will be no longer need of a driver. People with only driving skill will become unemployed and they will face difficulty to earn their living. For instance, China started a self-driving taxi service across its main cities, due to this step unemployement for drivers increases in those areas. But, this disadvantage can be manage by proactive career transition programs.

To conclude, Although automated vehicles have some drawbacks like joblessness, I firmly advocate that its advantages, such as human oversights and expand overall productivity outweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The main ideas—safety, productivity, and unemployment—are relevant. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding productivity is brief, and the discussion on unemployment could be more deeply explored. While the position is clear throughout, the supporting points are somewhat generalized. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your examples and provide more nuanced analysis of the implications of driverless technology, rather than just stating the benefits and drawbacks.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the advantages from the disadvantages. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'For instance', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'its benefits' in the introduction, where the pronoun reference is slightly ambiguous given the plural subject 'vehicles'. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You demonstrate an ability to use topic-specific terms like 'autonomous', 'unmanned', and 'proactive career transition'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'traffic collisions' (usually 'road accidents' or 'vehicle collisions') and 'human oversights' (which implies a mistake, whereas you meant 'human error'). Additionally, there are minor spelling errors like 'unemployement'. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that your word choices accurately reflect the intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('unemployement for drivers increases' should be 'increased' or 'would increase') and article usage ('a research states' should be 'research states'). There are also errors in pluralization and tense consistency, such as 'this disadvantage can be manage' (should be 'managed'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
