IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.
Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Cars, buses and trucks are likely to be automated in the future and only passengers will be present in these vehicles when commuting. Although driverless vehicles have some drawbacks, I believe that their benefits outweigh the drawbacks because it reduces human error and improves productivity.
Conveyance without drivers is becoming popular, as technology and Artificial Intelligence are advancing. AI has a very quick reaction time and it is also very precise and accurate, hence companies such as Tesla are using AI to make vehicles driverless, which leads to fewer traffic collisions and better road safety. For example, research states that there are 30% lower chances of traffic accidents of an autonomous cars as compared to traditional vehicles with drivers. Furthermore, when people are travelling in automated car, they can do their work or study in the meantime without having concern about driving.
The main disadvantage of self-driving automobiles is that unemployment will increase due to this. If all vehicles become unmanned in the future, then there will be no longer need of a driver. People with only driving skills will become unemployed and they will face difficulty earning their living. For instance, China started a self-driving taxi service across its main cities, due to this step unemployment for drivers increased in those areas. But, this disadvantage can be managed by proactive career transition programs.
To conclude, Although automated vehicles have some drawbacks like joblessness, I firmly advocate that their advantages, such as reducing human errors and expanding overall productivity outweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The arguments regarding safety and productivity are relevant and supported by a specific example (Tesla). The counter-argument regarding unemployment is also addressed, and the student provides a logical rebuttal by suggesting career transition programs. The ideas are well-developed, though the discussion could be slightly more extensive to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'For instance', and 'To conclude' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the transition between the introduction and the first body paragraph could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning with some flexibility. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'autonomous cars', 'traffic collisions', and 'proactive career transition'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'do their work... without having concern about driving' (should be 'without having to worry about driving') and 'unemployment for drivers increased' (should be 'unemployment among drivers'). While the range is adequate, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as '30% lower chances of traffic accidents of an autonomous cars' (should be 'in autonomous cars') and 'there will be no longer need of a driver' (should be 'no longer a need for a driver'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The punctuation is generally accurate, but the control over complex structures is not yet consistent enough for a Band 7.
