IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The future of transportation means such as cars, buses, and trucks is predicted to be completely automatic and with no obligation of a driver but only the passengers. I personally see that this awaited future invention is more likely to be an unsatisfactory innovation rather than the effective invention some believe in, mainly because of its unpredictable reactions, and ethical dilemmas.

In one hand, this creation can help reduce accidents rate as computers do not get distracted, tired, or emotional. Therefore, this leads to less traffic, more accessibility, and increased safety in general. For example, these future cars include a sensor suite that has a vision of all possible angles, operating without human backup, also use AI in order to anticipate the current traffic patterns and avoid it, providing more efficiency and accessibility.

In the other hand, self-driving systems are still vulnerable to software glitches and sensor failures. As a result, it can react unpredictably if a coding error occurs or if detection systems get confused by rains, snows, or fogs. Furthermore, algorithms lack human values, for instance, if a cars' brakes fail, it must choose between hitting a group of pedestrians or a swerving into a wall, possibly killing its own passengers.

In conclusion, replacing human drivers with computers and self-driving systems is still predicted to be the upcoming possibility of our means of transport. In my opinion, the downsides of this innovation out shadows its benefits, as algorithms are still exposed to several software problems, and ethical challenges.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of software glitches and ethical dilemmas. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the ethical dilemma regarding the 'trolley problem' is introduced but not fully explored in terms of its broader societal implications. While the position is clear throughout, the essay would benefit from more detailed examples or a deeper analysis of the arguments provided to reach a higher band. The structure is logical, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the advantages and disadvantages. Cohesive devices such as 'In one hand', 'In the other hand', 'Therefore', and 'Furthermore' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with the use of cohesive devices; for example, 'In one hand' and 'In the other hand' are non-standard idiomatic expressions (the correct form is 'On the one hand'). Despite this, the progression of ideas is clear, and the overall structure is coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some topic-specific terms like 'sensor suite', 'traffic patterns', 'software glitches', and 'ethical dilemmas'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'awaited future invention' is slightly unnatural, and 'out shadows' should be written as one word, 'overshadows'. The phrase 'effective invention' is also a bit vague. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that less common vocabulary is used accurately to convey your meaning without minor errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'a cars' brakes' (should be 'a car's brakes'), 'a swerving' (should be 'swerving'), and 'rains, snows, or fogs' (these are typically uncountable in this context). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. You have attempted complex structures, but the control over them is inconsistent. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will help improve your accuracy.
