IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

I believe that the driverless vehicles demonstrated plenty of advantages such as more convenient transportation systems, eliminating human error, and providing more independent services for elderly.

Firstly, driverless vehicles allow to reduce the human error. Several human error such as drunk driving, fatigue spending, and distracted driving adversely affected to dramatically increase the number of car accidents currently. However, the continuously technologically development will be able to increase productivity and efficiency of driving in long-term.

Secondly, optimized traffic flow and AI generated calculation can reduce the congestion. Driverless vehicles enables to solve the fundamental predicament of traffic congestion, reduce pollution, and enhance productivity. Furthermore, drivers can rest or relax while study, sleep, work during the transit.

Lastly, driverless vehicles are able to provide more safely mobility for elderly, disabled individuals, and non-drivers. These massive pros allow to attract more higher usage of vehicles, enhancing revolutionized convenience of traveling the vehicles regardless of the costly initial investment and infrastructure.

However, driverless vehicles also have some drawbacks such as high investment cost, hazardous sensor failure in extreme weather, and high unemployment. Hence, While driverless technology poses risks, the safety and efficiency gains far outweigh them.

Although the widespread usage of driverless vehicles may lead to significant job displacement and potential cybersecurity concerns, I firmly believe that the advantages outweigh the drawbacks. The immense potential to eliminate human error—thereby saving countless lives—along with improved traffic efficiency makes the transition to autonomous transport an overall beneficial shift for society. Additionally, driverless vehicles illustrate beneficial modernization, highlighted by the removal of human error, a dedicated Al generate system, and the reduction of congestion. These significant driverless vehicles will be implemented to streamline traffic flows.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas are relevant, covering safety, traffic efficiency, and accessibility. However, the development of these points is somewhat superficial. For instance, the mention of 'cybersecurity concerns' and 'unemployment' is brief and lacks depth. While the position is consistent, the supporting arguments could be more thoroughly extended with specific examples or logical consequences to reach a higher band. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main argument, but some points in the body paragraphs are repetitive, such as the repeated focus on 'human error'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Lastly', and 'However' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences is slightly disjointed. For example, the transition between the discussion of elderly mobility and the mention of 'costly initial investment' feels abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the final paragraph contains some redundant information that slightly disrupts the overall progression of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated language such as 'fundamental predicament', 'autonomous transport', and 'job displacement'. However, there are several instances of awkward collocations and word choice errors, such as 'fatigue spending' (likely meant 'fatigue-related driving'), 'attract more higher usage', and 'enhancing revolutionized convenience'. These errors do not impede communication, but they demonstrate a lack of precision. To improve, focus on learning common collocations related to technology and transportation to ensure more natural expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and prepositions, such as 'allow to reduce' (should be 'allow us to reduce'), 'adversely affected to dramatically increase', and 'AI generate system' (should be 'AI-generated'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and pluralization, such as 'the continuously technologically development'. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors indicate a lack of control over complex structures, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band in this criterion.
