Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate about the future of modern vehicles. Some individuals believe that driverless cars have numerous benefits such as easy in operation and less maintenance expenditures. Nevertheless, in my opinion, vehicles without drivers have significant drawbacks as this will reduce employment opportunities and become cause of major accidents.

On the one hand, supports argue that driverless vehicles need not require man power to drive. This is because of these only require to put address and can take people to their destination by crossing all traffic signals automatically. Furthermore, they are mostly electric vehicles so they do not need engine services like petrol or hybrid cars. As a result, less money will spend to maintain these cars. For examples, BYD offers electric cars that can be drived without human intervention and very unlike needs to visit service centre.

On the other hand, opponents believe that driverless cars will create a major dent on empolyment opportunities. This means that a substantial amount of individuals who are working as a professional driver will become unemployed. For instance, many indiviuals are working as a rideshare or taxi drivers, they will lose their source of income due to modern vehicles. Moreover, if there is an technical error or glitch comes while driving, this can be a major cause of accidents. As thers is no human involvement. This once happened in the USA where driverless vehicle collided with the street wall.

To conclude, although modern cars have some advantages like less effort require and no expenses to maintain, the drawbacks are significant like

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both advantages and disadvantages, maintaining a clear position throughout. However, the conclusion is incomplete, which impacts the overall development of the argument. While the ideas regarding employment and safety are relevant, they could be more thoroughly extended to reach a higher band. The introduction and body paragraphs provide a sufficient overview, but the abrupt ending prevents a full synthesis of the arguments presented. To improve, ensure that the conclusion fully restates the position and summarizes the main points without leaving sentences unfinished.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and the progression of ideas is generally clear. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is imprecise. For example, the sentence 'This once happened in the USA' lacks a clear antecedent. Additionally, the incomplete final sentence disrupts the coherence of the conclusion. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring all sentences are complete will enhance the logical flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'human intervention' and 'maintenance expenditures'. However, there are several word-choice errors and spelling mistakes, such as 'supports' instead of 'supporters', 'empolyment', and 'indiviuals'. These errors do not impede communication but indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and spelling. Expanding the range of vocabulary to include more topic-specific collocations would help elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'easy in operation' (should be 'easy to operate'), 'drived' (should be 'driven'), and 'if there is an technical error... comes' (redundant verb usage). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with sentence fragments like 'As thers is no human involvement.' To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct verb forms, and ensuring that every sentence contains a complete independent clause.
