IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that different mode of vehicles in the future will no longer need drivers and the only people inside these transports will be passengers. In my opinion, the advantages of driverless vehicles do not outweigh the disadvantages of unemployment to a specific group and increased number of accidents.

One of the major advantages of driverless transportation system is the reduction is carbon emission. In order to create driverless vehicles, electric vehicles production need to be introduced, which reduces the use of diesel or patrol based system, one of the key drivers of green house gas emission. However, electric vehicles such as cars, buses and trucks, do not produce CO2 to that extent, helping environmental aspects. As a result, the effects of global warming can be reduced a lot in the long run.

There are, however, some disadvantages as well. One of the pressing problems would be loss of jobs for many people in the future who depend on this profession for their livelihood. These large number of people, for example, would create an avoidable financial burden on the governments. Another drawback is the increased number of casualties on road. For instance, there has been reports of Tesla's electric cars' functional problems with navigation and break failure, causing accidents to both the passengers and the pedestrians. As human brain is considered much higher in quick reaction to reflexes than robots, such accidents will comparably low with human drivers than with robots. Therefore, the number of accidents might increase in the future, affecting people's quality of lives.

In conclusion, I think the advantages of reduced green house gas emission do not outweigh the disadvantages of increase in unemployment and accidents in the future with driverless transportation system.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both advantages and disadvantages and clearly stating a position. The ideas are relevant, such as environmental benefits versus unemployment and safety concerns. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding environmental benefits is a bit repetitive, and the claim that accidents will increase is supported by a specific example, but the reasoning could be more nuanced. The position is consistent throughout the essay, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0, but it lacks the depth of analysis required for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the major advantages', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing of ideas could be more sophisticated to reach the higher bands. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'carbon emission', 'greenhouse gas', and 'pedestrians'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'different mode of vehicles' (should be 'modes of transport') and 'patrol based system' (should be 'petrol-based'). There are also minor spelling errors like 'break failure' (should be 'brake failure'). While the range is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility of higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'electric vehicles production need to be introduced' (subject-verb agreement) and 'there has been reports' (should be 'there have been reports'). Additionally, the sentence 'such accidents will comparably low with human drivers than with robots' is awkward and grammatically incorrect. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. More attention to subject-verb agreement and comparative structures is needed.
