Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the upcoming years under rapid modernization, vehicles like buses and trucks are expected to be driven automatically, without the need for a driver. In such case, the passengers would be the only occupants of these vehicles. This essay discusses the various advantages and disadvantages of such a scenario, and explains how the disadvantages can not be overlooked due to the advantages.

Automatic automobiles would have several advantages. As artificial intelligence is significantly efficient then humans, driverless vehicles would make travelling much more swift and efficient, especially in the public transit sector which carries thousands of people daily to their work and other places. Driverless vehicles would also make travelling much more affordable and enjoyable. For example, if there aren't any drivers which the public transportation agencies have to pay, they can make the tickets much more affordable. Similarly, car trips will be more enjoyable for families as they don't have to focus on driving the vehicle. Hence, driverless vehicles would give us numerous advantages.

Driverless automobiles would also pose several disadvantages discussed in this paragraph. Driverless vehicles would be prone to accidents and traffic incidents, as artificial intelligence lacks the creative thinking as that of humans. This may also be caused due to improper design of the vehicle. Furthermore, digitally controlled vehicles would be vulnerable to cyber threats. For example, a vehicles that uses internet to navigate can get hijacked through cyber hacking, which is a huge disadvantage of driverless vehicles.

To conclude this essay, driverless vehicles would be a major step towards the success of humans and the advancement of technology. Though the concerned groups must ensure the proper designing, testing, and cyber proofing of these vehicles before making them publicly available. If all these things are kept in mind, then the driverless vehicles would be a major success.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both the advantages and disadvantages of driverless vehicles, fulfilling the prompt requirements. The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are relevant. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'creative thinking' as a disadvantage is mentioned but not fully explored or supported with a concrete example. Similarly, the conclusion is a bit abrupt and does not fully synthesize the arguments to provide a definitive answer to whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is extended with more depth and that the final stance is explicitly stated and justified.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore', 'Similarly', and 'To conclude this essay', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more varied. For example, the repetition of 'driverless vehicles' at the start of several sentences makes the flow feel a bit repetitive. Improving the variety of cohesive links and using more sophisticated referencing would enhance the overall flow and coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'artificial intelligence', 'public transit sector', and 'cyber threats'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'swift' to describe travel efficiency, which is slightly unnatural in this context. Additionally, some phrasing is repetitive. To improve, focus on incorporating more precise collocations and a wider range of academic vocabulary to express complex ideas more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'As artificial intelligence is significantly efficient then humans' should be 'more efficient than humans'. There is also a subject-verb agreement error in 'a vehicles that uses'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for minor errors would significantly improve the grammatical quality.
