Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, due to technology advancements and particularly evolution in artificial general intelligence. There is a prediction that in future all the vehicles including cars, buses and trucks will be self-driven. I think that, it is a positive development because the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages.

Modern self-driving vehicles will reduce the driving power load on humans. For now, for driving a car, bus or a truck a dedicated person is required to observe the road and all the conditions for safe and effective travel. You must need to be attentive and focused while driving to avoid sudden accidents. For instance, if someone is traveling alone and has to attend an emergency business meeting during travel, they can attend conveniently while in self-driving vehicle. Moreover, some families has to hire specific drivers at their home for their regular commute, therefore, release of self driving cars will omit this factor of hiring an extra drivers for family vehicles.

However, it also comes with several drawbacks. There are many drivers who survive on the wages earn through uber and other driving services. Hence, it will lead to downsizing in the organisations like uber or make some driver jobless who are responsible to take care of their families, children or dependents. Furthermore, the developing countries would need huge funding for their roads infrastructure to construct it according to the proper rules and regulations, so that driverless cars can conveniently move and perceive the surroundings.

In conclusion, driverless cars are positive advancement of the technology which reduces human workload and driving expense. But also comes with several drawbacks of making people jobless and require governments increased fundings. But still benefits take lead over drawbacks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas are relevant, covering productivity benefits and the economic impact on drivers and infrastructure. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about infrastructure in developing countries is introduced but not fully explored in terms of how it might be overcome or why it is a significant barrier. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more nuanced examples or deeper analysis of the implications of your arguments, rather than listing them briefly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Hence' are used to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. Additionally, some sentences are fragmented, such as the opening sentence, which lacks a main verb, and the sentence starting with 'For now, for driving...', which is slightly clunky. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'artificial general intelligence', 'infrastructure', and 'downsizing'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'release of self driving cars' (should be 'advent' or 'introduction') and 'benefits take lead over' (should be 'outweigh'). To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. The range is sufficient to communicate, but lacks the sophistication required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'some families has to hire') and sentence fragments (e.g., 'Nowadays, due to technology advancements and particularly evolution in artificial general intelligence.'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some unnecessary commas. To improve, you should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and verb. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy is essential for a higher score.
