IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.
Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In upcoming years, only passengers will reside in the vehicles, as they will be driven by autopilots. One advantage is that the individuals from any age group can travel by driverless car, as they will remove the dependency of human drivers. In contrast, totally relying on technology can cause a serious accident if not monitored by an adult. Also, an accuracy error or a computational bug can lose control on speed of the vehicle. Although automated cars offer increased mobility for non-drivers, I argue that the severe safety risks mean the disadvantages significantly outweigh any potential benefits.
Children and elderly people they are not capable of driving they need a driver for travelling driverless cars solve these issues. A car company Tesla is capable of driving car using auto-pilot mode but currently an adult is needed to monitor the car. Also, their cars are connected with internet which enables live navigation, people need their phone for navigation while travelling a unknown area. Risk of handling phone while driving is substituted by the car as it can provide voice commands and voice feedback.
A car without driver becomes risk if the autopilots loses its control from the vehicle speed and also if it fails to detect the nearby vehicles. Recently, a Tesla car in auto-pilot mode got crashed in an accident because the car lost it control over the speed and it smashed into a pole. The sensors used in the cars were not accurate and it captured that the road is empty, so it accelerated the car to top speed in order to reach the passengers on time. For that reason, totally depending on a driverless car can be deadly and it might lead to death.
In conclusion, although driverless vehicles offer greater mobility for children and the elderly by eliminating the need for a human driver, I believe the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages. The potential for catastrophic software failures and fatal accidents poses too great a risk to rely entirely on automated systems.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all parts of the prompt by discussing both advantages and disadvantages and providing a clear position. Your ideas are relevant, such as the increased mobility for non-drivers and the safety risks associated with software failures. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven. For example, the point about navigation and voice commands in the second paragraph is slightly tangential to the core debate of driverless safety. To improve, ensure that every supporting point directly reinforces your central argument regarding whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In contrast', 'Also', and 'In conclusion', to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel mechanical or slightly repetitive. Additionally, there are instances where the flow between sentences is slightly disjointed, such as in the second paragraph where the jump from Tesla's autopilot to phone navigation is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'autopilots', 'computational bug', and 'catastrophic software failures'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'lose control on speed' (should be 'lose control of the speed') and 'captured that the road is empty' (should be 'detected that the road was empty'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, you need to use more precise collocations and a wider range of academic vocabulary to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'Children and elderly people they are not capable' (redundant subject), 'a unknown area' (should be 'an unknown area'), and 'if the autopilots loses its control' (subject-verb agreement error). While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately without missing prepositions or auxiliary verbs.
