Student answer (Band 5.5)

All cars, busses and trucks will be driverless in coming years. The only passengers will be travel inside these vehicles. I strongly believe that coming vehicles run with no drivers are better for safety and environment.

To begin with, one advantage of using driverless vehicles is safety. Artificial intelligence base vehicles reduce road accidents which leads to smooth driving and safe for the family. For example, those vehicles which controlled by human were caused as a serious injury on motorway or death for over speed and did not apply traffic rules. Therefore, driverless cars will be more convenient to drive according to traffic rules. One more positive point to use driverless cars is that these vehicles will provide comfort for kids and older people. For Instance, driverless vehicles will drive by the computer not a human. Human drivers often mistake because of distraction. In Addition, driverless vehicles will more useful because passengers will not need to driver.

On another hand, driverless vehicles will have some disadvantages, particularly in terms of unemployment. Many professional drivers, such as taxi, busses and truck drivers will lose their jobs after choosing driverless vehicles. For example, transport companies will replace human base vehicles into AI base vehicles to reduce labour cost. As a result, they will face an unemployment crisis. One more disadvantage is technology fails due to climate change. For instance, driverless vehicles will face serious issue at the time of heavy rain. Electricity base vehicles did not run smooth in heavy rain. Hence, due to heavy rain the function of the driverless vehicles will be damage.

In conclusion, driverless vehicles will provide safety and smooth system. Also, it saves a lot of money in fuel. But there will be some advantage of job losses.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas are relevant, covering safety and convenience as benefits, and unemployment and technical failure as drawbacks. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'unemployment' is mentioned but could be expanded with more nuanced analysis of economic shifts. The conclusion is slightly contradictory, as it mentions 'job losses' as an advantage, which is a misstatement of the student's own argument. Overall, the response is clear, but the depth of analysis is consistent with a band 6 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the topic. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'For instance', and 'On another hand', although some are used mechanically or incorrectly (e.g., 'On another hand' should be 'On the other hand'). Referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by grammatical errors that make the logical connection slightly strained. The paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'artificial intelligence', 'unemployment crisis', and 'labour cost'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'human base vehicles' instead of 'human-operated vehicles' and 'electricity base vehicles' instead of 'electric vehicles'. Spelling errors, such as 'busses' (buses) and 'driver' (drive), are present but do not impede communication. The range is sufficient for the task but lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms, articles, and prepositions (e.g., 'those vehicles which controlled by human were caused as a serious injury'). Subject-verb agreement and tense consistency are also problematic, such as 'driverless vehicles will more useful' and 'function... will be damage'. These errors occur throughout the text. While the student attempts complex sentences, the control over these structures is inconsistent, which limits the score in this criterion.
