Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is predicted that, in the future , cars, buses and trucks will operate without human drivers, meaning that everyone inside these vehicles will be a passenger. Although, driverless vehicles may have certain drawbacks, I believe that their advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

On the one hand, driverless vehicles may become common in the near future. Firstly, road accidents will be controlled because of human errors and unconsciousness, some people drive while exhausted and stress which in term result in severe accidents. Secondly, drivers may be tired, distracted or even busy in mobile phones and can also break traffic laws and regulations. While autonomous vehicles can better follow legal policies with consistently due to built in features and sensors. For example, a driverless car may react faster than a tired or distracted human driver in emergency situations.

On the other hand, driverless vehicles will be major problem for jobs related to driving. Taxi drivers, delivery boys, bus and truck driver may lost their jobs and become jobless, however, this may be a serious economic problem. Sometimes technology may fail or being hacked and the system can be malfunctioned. That types of vehicles may also have the risk of cyberattacks and if the system fail it will result in severe emergencies. For instance, if driverless trucks become widely used, thousands of truck drivers may loose their jobs, causing unemployment and financial difficulties for their families.

In conclusion, disadvantages are serious especially unemployment and technical problems but accidents will be controlled and transportation will be better accessible. Therefore, advantages outweigh disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas are relevant, covering safety benefits versus economic and technical risks. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding unemployment is mentioned but could be expanded with more specific societal implications. The conclusion effectively summarises the main points, maintaining a consistent stance throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored with more depth and nuance rather than listing points in a somewhat repetitive manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The use of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' helps guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'While autonomous vehicles can better follow legal policies with consistently due to built in features'. Improving the variety and naturalness of linking words would enhance the overall flow and coherence of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary like 'autonomous vehicles', 'cyberattacks', and 'malfunctioned'. However, there are several word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'unconsciousness' (instead of 'lack of awareness'), 'busy in mobile phones' (instead of 'distracted by'), and 'loose their jobs' (the verb should be 'lose'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision and sophistication of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and prepositions. Examples include 'system can be malfunctioned' (should be 'malfunction'), 'in term result' (should be 'in turn result'), and 'if the system fail' (should be 'fails'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary commas appearing in some places. While the errors do not prevent understanding, they are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band score.
