IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Technology and innovation has made the transport facility function possible even without a driver. In the coming years, we can come across a situation where the passengers will be the only ones inside a vehicle. This has both benefits and drawbacks. Although, it will cost more, I believe this technology will reduce accidents caused because of driver's loss of focus and create an efficient travelling experience which is a major plus point that outweighs the demerits.

The primary disadvantage of self driven vehicles is that it is likely to be more expensive. This is because this sophisticated level of technology requires high end machineries and a lot of investment regarding time and money to build. For example, a self driven car would require parts and sensors that would cost a lot more that normal cars. Lack of passengers faith upon these types of facilities during its initial stages could be another demerit. However, this cannot match the stronger side of self driven vehicles.

The advantages are more significant. Driver's emotion and mental situation has a huge impact on their driving. There have been cases where disturbed mental health and tiredness among drivers, leading to catastrophic accidents. With the advent of self driven transport facilities, this type of issue can be solved. Additionally, public transport without drivers will help to enhance transport efficiency as trains and buses will reach and leave their stations on time. Therefore, vehicles without transport will be far more advantageous.

In conclusion, I think lower rates of accidents and efficient transport facilities overshadows its higher costs. For these reasons, I believe the advantages overweighs the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas are relevant, such as the reduction of human-error-related accidents and improved efficiency in public transport. However, the development is somewhat limited; the discussion on disadvantages is brief, and the arguments could be further extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis. While the position is consistent throughout, the essay would benefit from a more nuanced exploration of the 'passengers' faith' point mentioned in the second paragraph to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the disadvantages from the advantages. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'However', and 'Therefore' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing (e.g., 'this type of issue') is occasionally a bit vague. Overall, the flow is smooth enough to follow the writer's line of reasoning without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at using more sophisticated terms like 'catastrophic', 'sophisticated', and 'advent'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'transport facility function' and 'vehicles without transport', which sound unnatural. The phrase 'passengers faith upon' is also grammatically and lexically awkward. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Technology and innovation has', 'advantages overweighs') and minor punctuation errors (e.g., the unnecessary comma after 'Although'). Some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'cost a lot more that normal cars' (should be 'than'). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and refining complex sentence constructions.
